All thyroid med preparations vary in their effectiveness due to the patient's response to the fillers used to make them.

If you were taking Synthroid brand and it worked for you, it's really a matter of trial and error (unfortunately) to find one that works.

There are many generic manufacturers of thyroid meds so you could ask your pharmacist to supply a different one.....and be sure to note the manufacturer's name so you can request it each time you get a refill (that's in the thought the particular product works for you).

It's entirely possible to be treated successfully with generics as long as the doctor makes sure to write the mfr's name on every refill Rx.

I'd learned this before starting thyroid meds. So, when my doctor Rx'd Levoxyl and my pharmacy supplied Mylan generic, I decided to see if Mylan worked for me.....this means a significant savings for me since Levoxyl would cost me $200 for 90 days' supply and the Mylan only $17-18.

I did well with Mylan and continue to take it (5 years now).

Same deal with Cytomel - I received Paddock Labs generic, did well on it and still take it.

fghi, will your insurance not cover synthroid at all or do they prefer you to start with the generics first? Many insurance companies do this today. If this is the case, you can as your doctor to call the insurance and say you were allergic and to pay for the name-brand. Check and see if this is the policy of your comany.

I didn't know I could ask my doc.Thanks for the reply both of you..I am really allergic to generic levothroid. I have tried it many times and I ended up paying full price for synthroid out of pocket.

fghi, they are saying there are different pharmaceutical companies that manufacture generics. When I briefly glanced at the different hypothryroidism pills, I saw like 5 (in 30 seconds, who knows there could be a lot more). For example, I know mylan's generic doesn't work on me, but levoxyl's generic does. You need to figure out which generic you were prescribed, and then try the others. All generics are made through reverse engineering, so just because you are allergic to one brand doesn't necessarily mean you'll be allergic to another generic since there'll all basically giving their best guess to the main synthroid.
