Got a message from my endo on my cell phone yesterday telling me that I was extremely low and was starting me on a new medication and that lab results were in the mail. So I can't give you numbers yet and I will pick up new meds this afternoon but I'm exhausted but when I lay down I constantly dream crazy things that make sense, it was so bad that I just got up at 4am and just stayed up. Plus my back and legs ache really bad and some swelling but the puzzler is that when i lay down I wake up with all my fingers throbbing really bad from the first joint to the finger tips. I know it will take a month or more for the new meds to start working but i can't keep this up. I really don't want to go to my GP and start with meds for sleep or pain so does anyone have any suggestions cause I can't keep on for very much longer. I feel like a walking zombie. My son who has Graves talks about his crazy dreams at night and so i thought he was just weird but know i know..

All of that's fairly common with thyroid disease.

Snippy, my neurologist told me that sleep apnea causes wierd, bad dreams. You might need a sleep study.

From my experience, being hypo causes bizarre dreams and odd sleep patterns. Hypo meds make it worse. The American refusal to take sleep medications has always puzzled me, guess its some Puritanical thing! Sleep deprivation is far more dangerous and destructive to your well being than taking any sleep aid.

Hi GageL. It's a matter of docs not wanting to prescribe sleep meds which are known to be addictive. They'll give you enough for a few nights, but after that, you're on your own. Back to insomnia. It's not the patient, it's the doctor.

I use Benadryl for sleep and warm Epsom salt baths for achy muscles. A heat pad for your back might be helpful. Magnesium citrate before bedtime might help with sleep, as will melatonin drops.

The benadryl give me such a hangover and sometimes it makes me jittery instead of letting me sleep. But will try the drops.

Fortunately I live most of the time outside of the US and I am not a US citizen, I am British. Most of the civilized world is more than puzzled by the Americans fear and loathing of easing pain and suffering, its something that makes zero sense to a logical mind.

Yes, some meds are definately addictive and potentially harmful obviously but its our choice and responsibility to understand that and act accordingly.

I am fortunate that I can get most any medication I need outside the country of the USA as can most of the world. Pain and suffering is not necessary with intelligent and informed medical care.

Do take care, do not suffer unecessarily if you can avoid it. Talk to your medical provider, (a truly American term!!!) and very best of luck to you. Please do not suffer needlessly.

Yes, Snippy it was your extremely low levels that are making you this way, it's really unfortunate that the doc waited this long to put you on thyroid meds after RAI. You really crashed!
