Hypothyroidism Support Group
Hypothyroidism is the disease state caused by insufficient production of thyrohormone by the thyroid gland. There are several distinct causes for chronic hypothyroidism, the most common being Hashimoto's thyroiditis and hypothyroidism following radioiodine therapy for hyperthyroidism. Advanced hypothyroidism may cause severe complications, the most serious one of which is...
You're right, I have nothing to lose. My MD won't put me on anything because my labs look "normal". So I don't really have another option at the moment, so I might as well try it!
It sounds like the ND knows what she's doing.
Best of luck to you moving forward - please keep us posted!
I'm on day two of the supplements, too early to tell. It will be interesting once I start the acupuncture next week, see if it makes a difference.
I've had great success with pain management through acupuncture before. My ND indicated this would be a different kind of acupuncture, less to do with my muscles, more to do with my meridians (whatever that is). Will see how it goes.
I suggest to research the hell out of Iodine.
Hope you feel better!
Ashwaganda
Rhodiola
I am taking ashwaganda for adrenals among other things. It comes cheaper in powder form at your local herbal store.
I have heard of your adrenal supps, there are several on the market, each works differently with everyone. The initial dosing can be quite jarring, so be prepared for some side effects. For me they evened out in about 4-5 weeks, and did not return until my adrenals crashed again and I had to up the cortex dose again and add in some additional adrenal hormones.
Titrating any med like hormones can be very rough on some people, so dont panic if that happens with you. And do expect it to take awhile before you start to feel improvement, but the accupuncture should help a lot, it does for me.
Lucky you found a good ND or you would still be under the impression that you were "normal". Doctors!!!
What kind of side effects are you referring to? What is it that can be rough on you? Just trying to understand what I MAY expect...
I am going to be patient though. I've only been on the supplements for a day and a half, so I am certainly not expecting any improvement for some time yet. I am looking forward to the acupuncture though.
Well, not everyone experiences the side effects and others to varying degrees. I happen to experience titration quite dramatically, but you might not, I hope so. Some side effects you might expect from adrenal cortex supps are anxiety, jitteriness, maybe some nausea. There are others but let's not jump the gun, if you start to get them, post them and we can figure it out. There are things you can take to lessen the side effects if necessary.
I always record my doctors sessions because so much goes down in an hour or with my ND an hour and a half that even tho I am given summaries afterwards, I like to remember everything I said and they said.
A good ND will want to give you some type of liver cleanse, be it a detox or several rounds of Milk Thistle and various other herbs, that's excellent advice and the right way to go. We cannot heal anything if our bodies are on toxic overload which most if not all of our bodies are if we live in 2013 and eat a typical diet. Most people do not do this detox and its vitally important. I do a liver detox 4X a year with my ND.
So, get your liver in order as your ND said, and your adrenals should respond more effectively to the supps, and then of course, you need to address your thyroid issues.
You are on the right track for sure. So good to hear that!
GageL - thank you for your additional thoughts. Yeah, I understand that one's experience with side effects will be different than another's. I just wanted an idea...the more I know, it helps. It's only been two days, I don't feel any better, but I don't feel any side effects yet. Just hoping to be "peeled off the pavement" eventually, so that I can get back to my normal life again, or at least part of what my normal life was.
I am a Graves' Disease patient, who has felt hypothyroid for most of my life but have not been diagnosed, only told I was hypothyroid under treatment with Anti thyroid drugs a couple of times, and not given supplements since going off the ATDs when both my TSH and FT3 have been low.
Researching this, I found that this could be a sign of "Central Hypothyroidism" which is due to insufficient TSH being secreted from the pituitary. Hypopituitarism can also result in under functioning of the adrenal glands and cause problems with fertility, etc.
Mainstream medical places, Mayo clinic site, etc, will say that a person should see an Endocrinologist for help with this, and since my Endo #1 or Endo #2 have never seemed to notice this, and since my husband doesn't want to have me go to an ND, I will be traveling for over 8 hours each way to see Endo #3 next week in Denver. She particularly specializes in the Pituitary, the Thyroid, and Bone health, and teaches at the University of Colorado Hospital.
At first, I thought I would just go to an ND, but now that I have researched it more thoroughly, I believe that this specialist is the one to see, and being checked out for central hypothyroidism is better than being given other treatments that may not apply to my problem.
