Hypothyroidism and Medicare

Can anyone advise me on Medicare coverage of thyroid blood tests? I have an aunt who was diagnosed about 8 mths ago and she hasn't had any further blood tests. She is convinced Medicare will only cover one test per year. I've been trying to find online information but am just finding generic maintenance testing info.


Would she be able to do more frequent testing in order to optimize and be assured Medicare would cover the tests? Thanks!

I dont know about Medicare but if she has insurance thru something medicaid based,they will cover it as often as the dr thinks its needed.I have MVP thru medicaid and my dr checks my thyroid in bloodwork every 3 months.I mean what shes saying isnt making sense to me,because you need to keep a closer eye on the thyroid than once a year.But idk much about medicare.If thats all they will pay for than thats awful!!!!

I read some more about it and it seems there are some rules about what thyroid tests medicare will pay for,but I think they will cover it if her tsh has been abnormal in the past.She should def call or ask her dr.

Unfortunately, your Aunt may be correct. If you have Medicare it will only pay for 1 test per year. HOWEVER, if the doctor is willing to go to bat for her there are ways around that. The best bet is to talk to the doctor not the front office.
