It seems like all of my life I'd lay in bed at night, drifting off to sleep, and hear whispering in my ears. Most of it was incomprehensible, but every once in a while, one word, or just my name, would come through clearly.
I always though everybody had this and it was like an after-image when you close your eyes - an after-sound of your eardrums echoing what you've been hearing all day. I thought the poor schitzophrenics were the ones who just didn't understand that it was just your auditory nerves mis-firing. Still, I never brought the subject up with anyone.
Then I was finally diagnosed with hypothyroidism and put on levothyroxine a few years ago. After a few months, I realized the whispering in my ears had stopped and I haven't heard it since. I finally broached the subject with some of my family who advised they have never heard voices or whispering when it's quiet.
Has anyone else experienced this?

How have you been feeling since starting thyroid medication otherwise?
In my case just the opposite has happened. I have had much more of this happening since I have been on thyroid meds.
I am going to print out all your posts with your permission and bring it with me to my neurologist.
I'm in tears I am so thankful.
It does not bother me to hear the snippets....(what I call them because it's not full sentences, just almost like one or two words) I take it for who I am but it does make me feel a bit better to know it is more common than I thought.

Hearing the "auditory mumbling" began with me as a kid. It started with hearing my name called - thinking it was someone in my family calling my name. Then, like you said, music or "snippets" rumbling in my ears when it was really quiet. I asked my family members if they experienced this - most of the women said, 'YES!"...Little did I know I had Hashimoto's and it was RAGING. The members who answered YES had either already been diagnosed with thyroid disease or was diagnosed with it later one.
So, Later, with proper treatment the auditory "mumblings" ceased for me as well.
