My stepdaughter was just diagnosed w/hypothyroidism. Her TSH was 14. Her doctor started her on 75mcg Synthriod and after a few days she got a mouth full of canker sores and she has terrible muscle weakness. She's thinking the worse now like she has something else wrong with her. I know muscle weakness is a side effect of Synthroid but I'm not sure about the canker sores. I also think starting her at 75mcg was too high. She only weighs about 110lbs.

Does anyone have any info to share?

Oh geez 110 lbs and 75 mcg? May be a stupid question, but does she have any labs to share? It's really the only way to know what's going on thyroid-wise. Thyroid meds don't usually cause canker sores, but I've learned from experienced that a too high or too low thyroid can mess with the immune system in a Baaad way.

I'll try and get some labs. She doesn't know I am hypo also and I really wasn't going to share my medical history with her, but I can she she's already on a bad road so I'm willing to tell her my story and share my info.

75 mgs to START???? That is outrageously stupid of her doctor.
As far as I know mouth sores are not a side effect of synthroid but the larger issue here is the 75 mg starting dose. I suggest she runs from that doctor as fast as she can. He is a moron.

She saw some random person at an emergency walk in clinic and told her to see a rheumatologist b/c he thinks she might have an autoimmune disease. I don't think that's the case. She had no problems before she took Synthroid. I just hope that the muscle aches/weakness goes away. Maybe I can convince her to see my doctor.

Sorry to hear about your stepdaughter's situation, dawnrose!

Canker sores can be caused by hypothyroidism.....maybe the high starting dose of Synthroid precipitated the typical development of new symptoms one can have.

I believe she *does* have an autoimmune disease: Hashi's

It would be g-r-e-a-t if she could see your doctor! He totally "gets thyroid" based upon what you've shared.

Ya know....I got to thinking (dangerous thing :).

It might not be a bad idea for your stepdaughter to get checked for Lyme....if both the ELISA and Western Blot tests come back negative, it would be prudent to have Igenex testing.

So my stepdaughter is on her way the the emergency room. She got freaked out when she started having tingling in her fingers(classic hypo symptom). I haven't had a chance to talk to her. We went to go see her yesterday and she was going to take a nap when her kids where napping(she has 10 month old twins). She told her father that she wants answers. Not sure if she's gonna get any in the emergency room.

Now that I'm dealing with Lyme in addition to hypo, I can tell you that MANY symptoms overlap. This was confirmed by the LLMD I saw 10 or so days ago.

It's because you reported your stepdaughter's muscle/aches and weakness that I suggested the Lyme testing.

Any type of tingling can not only be hypo but, Lyme.

She didn't get tested for Lyme in the hospital but they did say that the rheumatologist will test for it.

I didn't wanna scare ya, but a rheumy is in order. Canker sores and some of the other stuff can also be lupus, so all that needs to be ruled out. My guess is..it's just the initial *blast* of the thyroid hormones, but to be safe...that's the way to go. And, it'll give ya time to break the truth about thyroid-time to her.
