Hypothyroidism Support Group
Hypothyroidism is the disease state caused by insufficient production of thyrohormone by the thyroid gland. There are several distinct causes for chronic hypothyroidism, the most common being Hashimoto's thyroiditis and hypothyroidism following radioiodine therapy for hyperthyroidism. The only thing that helped me with these two particular symptoms was the achievement and maintenance of optimal levels.
I still wound up needing a few more levo dose increases after starting Cytomel before my levels were optimized back in June 2011.
Many people do fine just with levothyroxine.
Your labs will tell your story....
Your symptoms indicate the need for a dose increase.....50mcg is really a low dose.
I suspect your doctor is guilty as many are - looking at "normal" (aka in-range) levels and declaring the patient normal when the patient is anything but.
Thyroid textbooks are quite clear about the types of levels healthy people have.....I guess with the thousands of blood tests that can be done, doctors seem to forget this fact and patients suffer needlessly.
While my doctor isn't 100%, she's as close as I think I'll find. She recognizes that my "normal" isn't necessarily the same as another person's "normal".
She accepted my declaration of my optimal levels after I shared my symptoms journal as it corresponds to my labs.
If you want to achieve wellness, getting copies of your labs is step one.....learning how to interpret those labs is next and we'll show you how.
I had to learn about thyroid disease in order to escape years of suffering and be able to identify Dr. Right.
