Hypothyroidism Support Group
Hypothyroidism is the disease state caused by insufficient production of thyrohormone by the thyroid gland. There are several distinct causes for chronic hypothyroidism, the most common being Hashimoto's thyroiditis and hypothyroidism following radioiodine therapy for hyperthyroidism. Advanced hypothyroidism may cause severe complications, the most serious one of which is...
It took me a year to start feeling better which seems like a very long time, but is also a very short time compared to others who are still struggling with their symptoms. The key is to be persistent with your doctor, and try to find one who really cares and listens to you. I almost thought I would be destined to be bed ridden forever until she added the steroids. Good luck to you.
It took 15 months for my levels to optimize and "stick". That was back in July 2011.
I've inevitably needed very small dose adjustments to maintain my optimal levels.
I get labs done every 4-6 wks. to stay on top of things.
I've actually had times when my labs showed the need for a dose adjustment....I got the adjustment....and was able to escape symptoms.
Yes, there were a few times when I'd start to feel "off" and my thyroid labs explained why. Still, starting the needed dose adjustment often meant improvements MUCH faster than those during titration,
I finally stabilized and only needed dose adjustments in the spring and the fall (this is typical).
More recently, I've been battling an infection and have required more T3. I had some mild brain fog and loss of energy. Not bad overall - especially since healthy people have "off" days.
Please understand that it's not common for people to hang around on forums once they achieve wellness.
If you are proactive with your care and continue working towards what you know is proper treatment, you will heal. It "just" takes time. (blech ;)
I have "other issues" which include a possible adrenal problem...so I'm working on that, but having the thyroid balanced at least gives me enough insight to know what direction to go in, ya know?
I just got some good news that my adrenals are SLOWLY getting better. I only have to take my hydrocortisone in the morning now unless I feel like I need an afternoon boost.
I also have a testosterone deficiency so I'm working on getting that straightened out. One thing at a time!!!
I feel 100% better when I get enough sleep, and in my case that means 9 hours.
Hang in there Mariposa! You'll get there!
