Hi, "Tired." I can sympathize with your symptoms and am sorry to hear that you are having these problems. Thyroid disease causes all kinds of things to happen to our bodies and our operating systems, so there is no telling what is going on with you. I can say that I was on Zoloft on and off for about 10 years, but have not been on them since about 9 years ago. They helped me quite a bit and didn't really interfere with my thyroid issues that I could tell. Only your doctor and you can tell if the anti's will help you out, but it certainly sounds like you need some help of some kind. Are you sure that your levels are where they are supposed to be as far as the thyroid problems and other hormones, etc. are concerned? This may be one of the problems with the emotions. I am tired all the time lately, plus feeling 'down' because I am putting on weight that I know is directly related to the thyroid being out of kilter, but I am hoping that when I get more blood work done (soon) and get a recheck at the doc, my medication gets upped. That usually 'fixes' me.

Please keep us up to date on what happens and make sure those levels are in balance.

I was on anti-depressants for 20 years prior to being diagnosed hypothyroid. The last medicine I was on was Lexapro and it worked for me, I didn't feel depressed but I didn't feel really happy either. After I was diagnosed and have been on thyroid meds I started feeling very happy and a wonderful feeling of well being. I think the thyroid medicine actually compliments the anti-depressants. I have since stopped all my anti-depressant meds and no longer have that euphoric feeling which I kind of miss, but I'm not depressed either.

Thanks for your comments. I talked to my GP and I'm going to give Ciralex a try. My GP told me that with this antidepressant, I will probably feel worse for a week to ten days before I start to feel better. She told me that a lot of people quit taking it because of feeling worse, but she told me that she was sure if I could tough out the first 10 days or so, I will begin to see improvement. So I am preparing for a rough week ahead of me. But who knows, maybe I will be one of those who don't experience any bad side effects? Yeah right... My pharmacist told me that as long as I take this med a few hours after my thyroid med I should be ok. However, I am going to at least try taking this med at night and my thyroid med in the morning. I will do this as long as the antidepressant does not make me wide awake! If I find I cannot sleep, I will take it at noon instead. I take my thyroid med at 6:30 am so that is 5 and a half hours between. Anyway, I am hoping I will finally get some relief from all this hell. Here's to hoping!

I am on Cymbalta, I never heard of taking it several hours apart from synthroid, I will have to look into that.

I tried zoloft about 12 years ago, amitriptyline twice, about 8 years ago, then again this year, also tried celexa recently. The issue I have with them is that they make me so tired and they made it hard for me to get out of bed and start my day, which I have enough trouble with anyway, so I couldn't deal with the antidepressants adding to that. Also they all caused me to gain weight, except the celexa, which gave me chest pain, so I had to stop taking it after 2 weeks. Mainly my experience with them has been that the anxiety disappears, and the depression worsens to the point that I just never care what happened to me. I really don't like using them and would rather deal with anxiety and depression than be on antidepressants.

I am on Celexa and I have been on it for three years. I have come off other antidepressants in the past and I regret. When I am not on them, the anxiety and depression is terrible. I will never go off of mine again. I think the weight gain is still the thyroid.
