Hypothyroidism Support Group
Hypothyroidism is the disease state caused by insufficient production of thyrohormone by the thyroid gland. There are several distinct causes for chronic hypothyroidism, the most common being Hashimoto's thyroiditis and hypothyroidism following radioiodine therapy for hyperthyroidism. Advanced hypothyroidism may cause severe complications, the most serious one of which is...
Other important test are complete iron lab, B12, adrenals, Vitamin D3.
You shouldn't have to wait any more than 6 weeks for your labs and medication adjustments. If you do....get another doctor.
I thought I remembered you sharing some labs at one point so I clicked on the "view more posts" section of your avatar.
Your labs in May showed the need for a dose increase and this could very well explain the development of your headaches - your body isn't getting enough of the thyroid hormone it needs.
Thyroid textbooks indicate that people who are optimally medicated on levothyroxine (Synthroid is one brand) will have TSH 1.0 or lower.
In addition, they will have FT4 levels near the high end of the range and FT3 levels in the upper third of the range.
None of the levels you shared back in May met this criteria :(
And, just as others have mentioned, 25mcg is a very low dose and is really just a starter dose.
Most people take much higher doses. For example, I take 125mcg (along with 10mcg Cytomel).....others might do well on just 75mcg and some people take as much as 200mcg or more.
A thyroid-savvy doctor will run labs every 6-8 wks. and adjust the dose until the patient's labs are similar to the optimal levels indicated in thyroid textbooks....with the goal of complete symptom elimination.
Since your doctor found no need to increase your dose for whatever reason, maybe you could ask him/her to Rx an increase to see if it helps you feel better.
You could point out that all of your levels have "room" to move and still fall within the normal range.
You're not asking for anything unreasonable....you are asking the doctor to try something that might relieve you from your symptoms.
