I started out with graves disease about four years ago and when doctors at UAB could not control it I had RAI, So naturally now I'm hypo. Last week I was told that I was now 5 points away from being a diabetic and now must watch my carbs. So I drastically changed my diet and have had the worse indigestion and acid reflux since. I;m keeping my cards at 75MG a day and have increased my protein and veggies. Will my s\body adjust and finally settle down. I take .137 of levo and that is the inly drug I take on a daily basis\. sometimes I have to take ovc for joint and muscle pain. I'm terrified of becoming a diabetic on top of a messed up thyroid. Is anyone on here managing both and do you have any suggestions?

I do have both conditions your talking about. I've been pre-diabetic just over 8 years, and hypo for 18. My endo is really amazed I've not become a diabetic. I'm gluten free because I have celiac, and just got over gastritis. I eat almost all carbs because of the gastritis but not your usual grains because of the celiac. I cut out all candy and stopped drinking soda of any kind. I do try to watch how much sugar I'm eating. I also try to walk everyday. That is really important to keep your body moving, use up the stored sugar in your system. I only walk 20 minutes and the weather has to be good. My A1C has been at 5.9 to 6.1 now for 8 years. My understanding is at 6.5 they have to put you on insulin.

I hope this helps. You might want to post this on the diabetes support board and see what they say about it. I'm sure you would get some really good replies regarding diet, exercise, etc. They will really know a lot more than I do. Best of luck.

I'm managing both...kind of. I have Hashi's and also post prandial reactive hypoglycemia. My sugar is ok until I eat too many carbs or even too much protein and then it goes up normally (say to 145-150) but my insulin is overreactive and I drop way too fast. If I eat pure carbs like an ice cream cone or something, I go up and then down to about 52 in less than an hour. Whether prediabetic or hypoglycemic like me it's about the same suggestions. Eat many small meals a day, each with protein, fat and carbs. I use myfitnesspal to keep track of my intake and keep my carbs to under 60 a day and split them up over 6 mini meals about 2 1/2 hrs apart. Keeps things level. Going tooooo low carb with Hypothyroid seems to just drain energy and stress out my whole system, so this works for me. It's an odd way to eat, really it means having tiny meals and makes going out for dinner, etc, kind of difficult.
The key to both issues is to keep your blood glucose as level as possible and the key to that is a balancing act..
