Hypothyroidism Support Group
Hypothyroidism is the disease state caused by insufficient production of thyrohormone by the thyroid gland. There are several distinct causes for chronic hypothyroidism, the most common being Hashimoto's thyroiditis and hypothyroidism following radioiodine therapy for hyperthyroidism. Advanced hypothyroidism may cause severe complications, the most serious one of which is...
Tiredness is a hypo symptom, but could also be an adrenal problem.
And, with your "normal" (aka in-range) TSH, there's a good chance the endo won't even start you on much-needed treatment.
Endos are notorious for worshiping at the TSH altar.
Yes, there are exceptions to the rule but, the fact that the endo doesn't run the FreeT3 test or prescribe T3 is a big red flag. (the 3 endos I saw refused to run it as well and they were clueless as far as thyroid disease was concerned)
I doubt you'll get far with this guy. It would be a good idea to have a backup plan in the form of an appointment with at least one other doctor.
And, your experience with things worsening as the day progresses is yet another typical manifestation of hypothyroidism - sorry.
She only prescribed Synthroid..she would only do a Total T4 (of no use whatsoever) She didn't believe in FT3 or FT4 tests.
She also didn't "believe" in a thyroid antibodies test.. (her claim, it's the same treatment anyway!) She only looked at the TSH and based all her treatment on that..
I now have a new endo..he prescribes Armour does a FT3 and FT4 he also did an ultrasound, and found I have a badly consumed thyroid.
He discovered my antibodies are in the 1000's I take Selenium and vitamin D. I haven't found nirvana..but at least he listens to me..and has a somewhat open mind..
I believe my old endo shouldn't be treating T. patients..she was arrogant and clueless..
I agree with the others, and what CD says.. Maybe you should have a back-up plan..
I don't know if you saw the writings of thyroid-savvy Dr. Dommisse that I shared on here awhile back:
http://www.thyroidscience.com/hypotheses/dommisse.feb.2008/dommisse.feb.2008.pdf
You can see that he states healthy people have FreeT4/T3 levels in the upper third of the range. (this is documented in thyroid textbooks, by the way, and in countless other resources)
Your FreeT4 level was near the bottom end of the range - that's hypothyroidism.
I think your doctors have been confused by your TSH as many thyroid-clueless doctors are.
You deserve better.
Please do whatever you can to get the proper treatment. It will make a world of a difference.
