Hypothyroidism Support Group
Hypothyroidism is the disease state caused by insufficient production of thyrohormone by the thyroid gland. There are several distinct causes for chronic hypothyroidism, the most common being Hashimoto's thyroiditis and hypothyroidism following radioiodine therapy for hyperthyroidism. Advanced hypothyroidism may cause severe complications, the most serious one of which is...
So sorry to hear of your suffering.
Unfortunately, out-of-whack thyroid levels can really do a number on us.
I remember having anxiety and borderline panic attacks, too - they're horrible.
So, I'm thinking you're dealing with hypothyroidism since you're here. Were you recently diagnosed? Are you taking any meds?
I've found that by learning how to interpret my labs and working with my doctor to achieve the types of thyroid levels healthy people have was the key to my return to good health.
I'll gladly help you along the way for as long as you'd like company :)
I was kinda figuring that maybe i HAD been overeating. Or maybe i was getting older? (I'm 26) And it was just a part of life i needed to get used to. Then i started feeling tired all the time and i accredited it to the extra weight. And thennnnn the panic attack. It was completely out of nowhere and i literally thought i was going to die. Went to the ER and they prescribed me Ativan.. but i never filled it. (i hate hate hate pills!)
I was convinced if it was just anxiety attacks i could mind over matter it, and for the most part i think i did well. I only had a few minor attacks out of nowhere again. It felt mostly like someone really quick turned on my fight or flight response and shut it off just as fast. Which is still unnerving.
Then i started noticing that my heart would flutter or feel like it was skipping a beat. So more anxiety from that! I went to the doctor to get that checked out and he dig an EKG that came back normal, and decided to check my thyroid levels.
Thats when it all kinda came together! -.- So i dont think its weird at all! Just more of this Hypo crap =/!! Btw only three days on a very small dose and my heart palpitations are nearly gone. :)
In short... (lol right? short? pfff) don't let it get you down. It's sounds just like me so you arent alone at all :).
While I'm not happy to know that you're dealing with hypothyroidism, I'm happy that you got a diagnosis and are getting treated.
I am aware of countless people suffering for YEARS before getting a proper diagnosis/treatment.
Some of these people were diagnosed with and treated for diseases/conditions that they didn't really have.....or wouldn't have had if they were properly diagnosed/treated.
That's one of the reasons I'm here because SO many people that are dealing with hypothyroidism get told by their doctors that it's all in their head....or they need an anti-depressant...have to lose weight, etc., etc., etc.
This happens because some doctors don't think to check the thyroid or, those that do check the thyroid run the wrong tests....or, those that run the right tests misinterpret the results.
It's downright scary sometimes.
One time I drove to the 24hr urgent care convinced they were going to put me in the hospital for sure.
The waiting room was really crowded and a young man who also experienced panic attacks was talking to me about his panic attack experiences and eventually it went away ~ I was waiting for three hours. I told the employees that if it WAS a heart attack I would of died.
Another time I was at work. It was right before my shift and I, again, thought I was having a heart attack. I was seriously considering calling security to get me an ambulance when a co-worker came in and was talking to me and eventually it went away.
I've had more but these are the ones I remember. I don't really have them anymore.
I still have anxiety and depression. I'm given xanex and wellbutrin for those.
I've come to accept that these are part of my condition and I try to manage them as well as I can.
I used to get heart palpitations. That was before I was diagnosed with hypothyroid and thought that I was only hypoglycemic. When my thyroid meds are off I will get hypoglycemic again until my meds are adjusted.
Oh yeah ~ when I was getting my panic attacks there wasn't any reason for them either. Nothing in my life was going bad for me to have these panic attacks (except for my undiagnosed medical problem)
I would be at work and I would just get hit with this real sense of doom and feel like something terrible was going to happen. (nothing ever did)
It will go away when you get your levels right. One thing that helped me was the Daily Strength forums and getting advice and hearing other's stories and realizing that it wasn't just me ~ that it was the hypothyroid.
As it is being asked, how are your thyroid levels? If not at the 'right' places within the normal ranges, we can continue to feel bad. Are you on any thyroid meds?
