Have you ever had a sleep study done? I would recommend that to find the cause of your problems. Also, there is a possibility that your hormones are causing you to stay awake at night. Do you feel anxious when you try to sleep? Do you get startled and feel adrenaline surges that make it impossible to sleep?
Are you on any medication that could be causing the insomnia? I know you said you have it your whole life, along with other members of the family. Did you know sleep apnea shows up in families a lot?
If you have all that ruled out, and have to take some type of medication, I would not suggest a sleep aid, as they are wretched on the next day side effects.
something that helped me was a small dose of anxiety medication at night when I went to bed. Nothing too big to leave much in the way of side effects, but enough to calm your body down to sleep. I would ask the doctor about this, (remember, stress that you want a LOW dose).
Hope some of this helps. I would try recommending natural remedies, but honestly none have worked for me
