You would think by now they would know..... My son has graves and had RAI about 5 or 6 years ago. For the past two months he has been fighting depression real bad, low energy the works. Thursday I took him to the ER and we stayed in the OR for over 24 hrs so they could watch him. His BP was a little high but not bad but every time he sat up or stood up his heart rate would jump to 150-160. They finally admitted him on Friday morning mid morning. Every time I told them about the Graves they just gave me that "this wouldn't cause it look." and just ignore things, Finally last night when I checked to see if they had checked his thyroid and they had not I called the heart doctor they were getting to see him and pitched a fit. They were telling him he was having panic attacks ( hello ring a bell ) now blood work has been done to check his thyroid. I get so mad that they act as if we have no clue. NO CLUE WHAT SO EVER....PISSED.

He's probably not on enough replacement meds it sounds like maybe snippy. This can cause depression and low energy. (T-3) If you tell the docs this instead of focusing on Graves, they might understand it better. He's had his thyroid burned out so he might have gone more hypo or needs a med like Cytomel. Elaine Moore has said this is when people who have had RAI need it. About 5 or 6 years after. If they actually checked that level, I'd be surprised! It is important though. Always ask for the FT3 and 4 and tsh.

They are going to keep him a couple of days ru n some heart test anyway get his heart rate stable and then let him come home. But even if I said he had graves don't you think they would have said O, thyroid problems so lets check that be fore we decide he is going nuts. Sorry just get tired of the way we all are treated sometimes, like its your thyroid so it is nothing.

Snippy, what a nightmare for you, feeling so helpless in light of the fact that most doctors have no idea what they are doing and never have. My heart goes out to you.

Can you find a thryoid savvy doctor now in your area for your son? It sounds as if he needs some intelligent medical intervention now.

It's probably cause if they look at his chart and see he had RAI 6 years ago, they know he's probably not hyper anymore and they don't care about hypo thyroid. They think..that's okay, that's safe. Little do they know how people can suffer when hypo, it's really sad docs ignore it like that. They should have definitely checked his levels though.

If you remember I went thru just about every endo here ended up at University of Alabama and they still believe the same way there. I'm gonna let them finish there see what they do and go from there. The thing is he is 37 and just like when he was a teen, he doesn't wanna listen. I return Monday to my endo so I'll have blood work results sometime next week. I'm doing really good I think.

So sorry. Good for you in sticking with your guns. Now sometimes Graves can come back in some people. Also your heatrate can go that high if you little or no thyroid hormones.

They had better do the right tests and not that stupid TSH. Of course they will have to throw that useless test in I am sure.

doing just tsh is cheaper, therefore the standard. I am all for scientific medicine and such, but western medicine is becoming more and more 'standardized', instead of paying attention to the little things that might make a lot of difference.

I couldn't even get my clinic to check my basic vitamin levels. it wasn't ' warranted'. So if i have a deficiency i'll never know it! ugh doctors!!
