Hypoparathyroidism Support Group
Hypoparathyroidism is decreased function of the parathyroid glands, leading to decreased levels of parathyroid hormone (PTH). The consequence, hypocalcemia, is a serious medical condition. This presents with tremor, tetany and, eventually, convulsions. Severe hypocalcemia, a potentially life-threatening condition, is treated as soon as possible with intravenous calcium.
I am new to this group and I have been taking NATPRA injections since July of this year. I was very sick and in the hospital early June. My calcium was very low and my body was not responding to calcium supplements or calcitrol (vitamin D). My body did not even hold on to IV calcium doses. I have been Hypoparathyroid since my cervical spine surgery in 2015. My condition just kept getting worse until I started Natpara. My calcium is still up and down all day, everyday. I do feel better but I can’t physically handle the daily demands of life. I am constantly symptomatic. I am so tired and weak all of the time. To be honest I am Worried about getting so sick so quickly again. I feel so alone because no one understands this condition or how it makes me feel every day. I am so happy to have found this group. Anyone have any encouragement for me? Thanks

I have been struggling myself with Hypoparathyroidism and this last year has been very difficult. You're not alone. There are a lot more of us out here and it’s important to talk to each other . It’s hard having a rare disease and one that people can’t physically see. They don’t understand. But all of us on here do. I’m in the process right now of getting ready to start the pth injections. I’m hoping it works. My dr told me who is one of the top endos in MN that there is no guarantee that it will make you feel better. Some patients do and some don’t.
I have been unable to work bc of fatigue, weakness, muscles and bones . It really sucks. I’m just accepting I finally have this and it is difficult to treat. And not enough research on it.
