Hypoparathyroidism Support Group

Hypoparathyroidism is decreased function of the parathyroid glands, leading to decreased levels of parathyroid hormone (PTH). The consequence, hypocalcemia, is a serious medical condition. This presents with tremor, tetany and, eventually, convulsions. Severe hypocalcemia, a potentially life-threatening condition, is treated as soon as possible with intravenous calcium.

Can I just say how excited I am to be able to talk with people about this?

Heres my long story short:

About 12 years ago--well exactly 12 on April 1st--I went into full tetany for 15 minutes. I was only 17 and thought I was healthy until that point. I had to spend 4 days in ICU getting calcium drips and muscle relaxers to ease my pain and tetany! Anyone else ever gone into full tetany? I now have severe anxiety when not taking medication (lexapro) because subconsciously I'm terrified it will happen again. I also think o have PTSD because my anxiety spells usually happen around the anniversary of it!

Yes I have several times. It's very painful.
I've had this for twenty years and have learned to recognize the signs before I get that bad.

Yes!! I agree! Do you have anxiety from the trauma of full tetany?

I have had this once. I was 12 years old. I am now 21 and have severe anxiety just from this. Despite normal calcium levels, I cant fully get rid of my symptoms. I have tried all kinds of calcium supplements and doses.

My calcium levels are normal now too, but I have lingering anxiety from it! Tums is what works for me and a generic vitamin D supplement.

Following a total thyroidectomy I had one mild spell of try any and one over night stay and released was out just 24 hours and had another full blown tetany episode which caused a week long stay and iv infusion calcium and magnesium. After release I had two er visits for calcium levels being to high.
I am now five weeks out from surgery and weekly blood work shows no parathyroid function from either of the four parathyriod glands. Scared and discouraged is my present state. This is awful! I am now told by the Endocrinologist that I will have to go on like this a full six months before the official diagnoses of hypoparathyroid is made. Praying they recover or atleast just one does because living with this just five weeks has been horrible

my name is Ginette I've been searching for people to connect with who understand hypoparathyroidism it's been 19 years since all my parathyroids were destroyed I'm interested in what everyone takes for vitamins, minerals and medication I just wish I could feel better just wondering if I'm missing something or is this as good as it gets my biggest problem is that my brain wants to do something but my body goes the opposite direction if I do have a little energy, I overuse my muscles and there comes the tetany
