The term hypoglycemia literally means "low blood sugar." Hypoglycemia can produce a variety of symptoms and effects but the principal problems arise from an inadequate supply of glucose as fuel to the brain, resulting in impairment of function. Derangements of function can range from vaguely "feeling bad" to coma and in the worst case, can be fatal.

how often do you go to the doc?

I don't like going to the doc b/c it costs $20 a visit but being on anti depressents my old doc wanted to see me once every three months but now my new doc wants to see me again and it will only be two weeks! Plus I've already got 3 October appointments (Gastro, psychologist, and a naturopathic doctor highly recomended by a close friend for $50 and no one else has been able to help my stomache, the food journal I'm keeping for him is already starting to help). So I hate to piss my own doc off but I think I'm going to cancel that damn appointment next week. I'm not going to kill anyone else or myself I just get depressed b/c my stomache hurts so bad and I told her that and she is "very worried." Well, maybe if she sees I'm still alive by next month she'll stop. She wants to help me get my meds "just right" and she increased them but can't I take a month and see if they have an effect?

Well, I have given up on doctors now, but there was a time (when I was on antidepressents) when I had to see a psychiatrist every week or two. She pretty much forced me to come in by only prescribing enough medication to last me two weeks. So at least you have the option of cancelling! On top of that I had various appointments w/ my GP, gastro, and physical therapist. So yeah, I was always in and out of doctors' offices. (Since going on a strict hypo diet, I've gotten off all medications, and don't need to bother with doctors anymore.)

As far as your psychiatrist, why not remind her that the reason you've been so depressed lately is your stomach pain. Tell her you need to focus on getting your IBS under control, and that antidepressents and talking to a psychiatrist aren't going to do that. If she's understanding, she will realize that you're right. If she doesn't understand, then she's too overconfident in psychiatry, and you should find someone more understanding of your other issues to be on your medical team.
