Hypoglycemia (low blood sugar) Support Group
The term hypoglycemia literally means "low blood sugar." Hypoglycemia can produce a variety of symptoms and effects but the principal problems arise from an inadequate supply of glucose as fuel to the brain, resulting in impairment of function. Derangements of function can range from vaguely "feeling bad" to coma and in the worst case, can be fatal.
There do seem to be a lot of people asking about hypoglycemia who read on some website that they might have it, without having a doctor diagnose them. I wouldn't be surprised if these people post once or twice and then move on to another forum once they get a doctor's diagnosis.
All of my siblings seem to be undiagnosed hypoglycemic. I know my sister and brother carry chocolate around with them in case they feel their sugar drop.My other sister has to be careful because apparently she can't think straight and has a short fuse if she doesn't eat.
I remember going ziplining with a group of girls and I was amazed that none of them brought anything with them to eat. I mean, we didn't know how long we'd be gone and we'd be far away from any source of food so I was baffled that none of them brought food with them. Luckily I was wearing cargo pants so I slipped a Kashi bar in there in case anything happened. I think it is probably safe to say that if I have to be conscious about my blood sugar in between meals, which is basically the whole day, then I most likely have hypoglycemia.
so I have to be vigilant about maintaining my blood sugar because it can drop kinda suddenly and when it does it sucks. I actually started carrying around glucose tablets with me because before I would have to rush to the nearest store or vending machine to get a candy bar to raise my sugar, which is not the best remedy since that'll make me fat, but now I just pop two glucose tablets (15 calories each) and I am back to normal. I actually find that the glucose tablets work way faster and better than chocolate bars anyway. I put a tube of glucose tables in all of my jackets and bags so that I don't get caught out of the apartment without them.
Like "skmstjohn" each and every "routine" blood work shows my
sugar, fasting and non-fasting, well within the "normal" range and no dr.
will look into why, when mine does drop to the low "normal" I get
the symptoms of hypogycemia and why, if I eat something high in sugar, they abate for a while.
Just went to the outpatient clinic hoping to get an answer and took my
meter with me to show how my sugar goes from one extreme to another quickly. I was again told, that's perfectly normal and no, it
can't be hypogycemia.
For me it isn't a matter of being dx'[d, it's a matter of what the heck is doing this if it's not a form of hypoglycemina.
The American Diabetes Ass. did tell me there is such a thing as
non-diabetic hypoglycemia but again, no dr. is interested in that.
I see an endocronologist at the end of Jan. and just maybe he
will be able to determine if it's a sugar problem or possibly from
the tumor on my remaining thyroid though those numbers are also
in the "normal" ranges.
I'm just tired of these symptoms going on day and night, wearing me to a frazzle.
I didn't seem to find much activity here so have left the board my own self.
hope everyone does get the answers they need...
