Hypoglycemia (low blood sugar) Support Group
The term hypoglycemia literally means "low blood sugar." Hypoglycemia can produce a variety of symptoms and effects but the principal problems arise from an inadequate supply of glucose as fuel to the brain, resulting in impairment of function. Derangements of function can range from vaguely "feeling bad" to coma and in the worst case, can be fatal.
Your first issue is on spending money on snacks and eating out. Well, you need to change that habit and eat better food. Go to the market and buy the foods that keep your blood glucose up and balanced. Do not eat crap or you will feel like crap. It is your choice. If you don't make the right choices you will suffer until you do make the better choices. Read other peoples posts on what works for them for meals and snacks. You'll learn to carry snacks with you everywhere you go.
The personality shift is common as your blood sugar drops. There is a book out there on hypoglycemia and the author says that as he goes low he gets angry. On the other hand when I go low I start to cry. Everyone experiences the lows a little bit different. So when I go low I am confused, and have no patience, and I become very frustrated which I think makes me cry. These moods swings you are experiencing could be bipolar or it could just be because your blood sugar is low.
If you learn to eat the appropriate foods that will keep your blood sugar up longer you won't go through such an extreme personality shift, or you will go through less of what I call episodes. So when you know you haven't eaten for a a while, take out a snack and eat it to avoid going low. You need to think ahead and be prepared. I used to go through about 3 of these episodes a day, now they are down to about 2-3 a week.
You need to educated yourself. If you feel like you need to see a nutritionist ask you doctor for a referal. There are many good books out there too. I don't remember the titles, but I think they are listed on other peoples posts.
Hope this helps,
Maylene
A good book to read is The Low Blood Sugar Handbook: You Don't Have to Suffer by Patricia Krimmel, Edward Krimmel. Just like you, he gets really angry when he goes low. Edward Kimmel tells his story of being hypoglycemic. We can all relate to it. I found a lot of similarities and alot of differences.
12 carbs a day only? Wow, that's hardly anything. I tried a very low sugar diet and I was miserable. I did it for several weeks, and since I was miserable and did not function well my nutritionist said to up the carbs and start eating small amounts of fruit. She said that its better for me to feel better on a day to day basis even though it meant more sugar and carbs in my diet.

i have the same problem occasionally. Just try your best to pack and plan meals for your day, but dont beat yourself up if it doesnt work out, because being busy happens!
falling off the bandwagon is okay, as long as it isnt for very long, and you realize your mistake and try to improve it.
we'd all be lying if we said we're perfect about diet all the time, try to do the best you can to eat well & you can only improve from there!
