The term hypoglycemia literally means "low blood sugar." Hypoglycemia can produce a variety of symptoms and effects but the principal problems arise from an inadequate supply of glucose as fuel to the brain, resulting in impairment of function. Derangements of function can range from vaguely "feeling bad" to coma and in the worst case, can be fatal.

How does alcohol affect H-glyc. ?

Well I'm hypoglycemic and an alcoholic. I haven't really had any thing weird happen but then again I don't know what people with regular blood sugar feel like when they're drunk either. I have a prety high alcohol tolerance always have, might be the h-glyc. but I don't know.

Alcohol is a sugar, so just like eating sugars, it will tend to make your blood glucose spike and then crash. I've found that I can handle one drink along with dinner (but no other carbs in the meal!). Any more than that will make me sick.

I can't remember where I saw it, but I read that alcoholism can be a side effect of hypoglycemia because when blood sugar drops, the body desperately craves sugar to bring it back up. Alcohol converts to glucose faster than most foods so it is preferred when the body needs a boost.

It's not scientific proof by any means, but I have alcoholism in the side of my family that has several hypoglycemic members.

I had a severe allergic reaction to alcohol when I was a kid so I don't drink it or cook with it. When I found out how it can affect HG, I was just as glad I never tempted fate.
