Feeling anxious, looking for someone to talk to.

I recently went to an urgent care and had some blood tests done to determine if I have hyperthyroidism. I've been feeling very anxious ever since. I've had issues with anxiety for awhile and this is making it so much worse. They said it'll take a day or two to get my blood tests back. They actually got them today and I'm just waiting for the doctor to get in and review them. I was prescribed a low dose xanax to help with my feelings, but it doesn't seem to be working well today. I just want to know what's wrong and feel better. My blood pressure and pulse are normal, but the anxiety is reallying getting to me. I'm havng a hard time relaxing today. They told me if I feel worse I have to go to the ER and that freaked me out too. I can't stop thinking about it. This sucks and any advice would be appreciated. Thank you!

I am sorry you are not feeling well.

I hope these thyroid labs of the Free T3, Free T4, and TSH were done, especially and perhaps any thyroid antibodies to see if thyroid issues is of an autoimmune disorder. Depending on which of the Free Ts, can be either one or the other or both, that will decide on the types of meds to be taken such as an ATD (anthyroid drug) or a beta blocker or both.

If you so feel inclined to post your labs include the lab reference ranges and which meds that will be used for the thyroid; we can better help you figure things out.

I do not know anything about Xanax to comment on it.

I know the anxiety well. :) If you do have hyperthyroidism and are feeling a lot of anxiety (which is normal), a beta blocker would definitely help with that. There is some medical documentation that prescription antidepressants like Xanax are less effective (I read about it Psychology Today & my own psychiatry physician corroborated it). My personal experience was with Zoloft and I ended up stopping that medication, choosing to do a more natural route. However, that is something to be discussed with your physician. In the meantime, if you need a little calming boost, try bananas (for dopamine), SAMe (neurotransmitter food for your body's serotonin/dopamine levels & generally safe to take with meds but make sure you read about it first for your own comfort), or some lemon balm (herbal supplement or tea). Typically those with hyperthyroidism are also Vitamin D deficient, so it may be worth asking your physician about it. Good luck!
