Hyperparathyroidism Support Group
Hyperparathyroidism is overactivity of the parathyroid glands resulting in excess production of parathyroid hormone (PTH). Increased PTH consequently leads to increased serum calcium (hypercalcemia) due to 1) increased bone resorption, allowing flow of calcium from bone to blood, 2) reduces renal clearance of calcium, and 3) increases intestinal calcium absorption.
For me I have had high 25OH vitamin d levels (over 80 one time in fact) concurrent with higher than normal calcium and high PTH levels which is not supposed to happen. I also don't have symptoms other than osteoporosis which is common in post menopausal women anyway so it is pretty hard to say what caused it.
So I guess let your experience with how you feel after being outdoors be your guide as to how you might feel taking supplements or you could even just bypass the supplements this time of year and spend more time outside if that is feasible.
bm55: I never new that hypothyroidism could cause low vitamin D as well. I'm on 50mg of synthroid but still have symptoms.
