Hyperparathyroidism is overactivity of the parathyroid glands resulting in excess production of parathyroid hormone (PTH). Increased PTH consequently leads to increased serum calcium (hypercalcemia) due to 1) increased bone resorption, allowing flow of calcium from bone to blood, 2) reduces renal clearance of calcium, and 3) increases intestinal calcium absorption.

Muscle Strength and Hypercalcemia

Hello. 


Do any of you experience muscle weakness and fatigue while working out? Is building muscle difficult?


I've had hyperparathyroidism for years, however, my endo said drink lots of water and don't worry (blood calcium in the 10s). I'm now 51 and recently began feeling bad. No energy, difficulty exercising in my group fitness classes, lots of aches and pains. I haven't slept well in years. I made an appt and told him I don't want to go on like this and he recommended I see a surgeon at UCLA to have my gland removed (upper left PT gland). Recent blood work shows my calcium is over 11!


Please share your experiences about pre and post-op physical symptoms. Have they improved? How long did it take?


I'm so excited to meet with my surgeon. I want to feel healthy again.

The only cure is surgery and asap as allowing hyperparathyroidism to go on will continue to make you more and more sick and damage more and more of your organ systems. Please go to parathyroid.com to thoroughly educate yourself. I just had my surgery there on Monday, Sept. 18 at the Norman Parathyroid Center in Tampa and so glad I did.

yup fatigue, burning blood, weakness, charley horses in my limbs which my family would have to gently pull my limbs to help relieve, days unable to walk as every muscle in my body felt like I had just ran a marathon when I had not ... for me I am a survivor of the mother gland and level 15 and above exposure long term since birth and am now 48. It has been 18 years since we at least got the calcium under level 10. However Mayo Clinic testified in my medical chart when I then got internal stones that in truth I have been passing stones of many kinds my entire life, it was just not until I was 29 that the first waves had to be removed and then continuously, some 8 days apart until my operation in 2010 Since the operation I have had to have 3 operations to remove stones and currently am now looking at another one.
Even though we have things reading normal the good doctors keep trying to make sure everyone understands that did not have the gland "removed" as it was not a tumor that they are not cured and even at normal levels we will still have stones and be sick. Which I am.
