Hyperparathyroidism Support Group

Hyperparathyroidism is overactivity of the parathyroid glands resulting in excess production of parathyroid hormone (PTH). Increased PTH consequently leads to increased serum calcium (hypercalcemia) due to 1) increased bone resorption, allowing flow of calcium from bone to blood, 2) reduces renal clearance of calcium, and 3) increases intestinal calcium absorption.

I usually take 10mg of reactine for my allergies. On high pollen days or when my allergies are worse I take 20mg(I get the pills split in half and just take the other half) I felt heart palpitations kind of a fluttering. I've had them before. I had a headache and felt a little dizzy. BP was 125/91 and pulse 71. My BP monitor detected an irregular heartbeat which has never happened before. I do drink soda but it has never shown an irregular heartbeat. I don't drink excessive amounts. Could it be related to high calcium? I still haven't heard anything about my labs. I took the extra reactine today and I don't feel the way I did yesterday.

yes heart palpitations are a symptom as well as left ventricle atrophy when you have Primary Hyperparathyroidism.

Thanks parachild! I have a heart murmur but was told it was nothing to worry about. They said I had slight mitral valve leakage.

My blood pressure is up to 130/94 tonight. Whenever it goes up I get a headache, pain in the back of my neck, get dizzy and weak. I was on two blood pressure medications but was taken off of one because my doctor said it was making my blood pressure too low. Maybe this is contributing to my heart palpitations. Does blood pressure go up more the higher the calcium spike? Does blood pressure usually go up at night?

Yes, blood pressure will elevate when your calcium levels are high. This is hypercalcemia.
Blood pressure should not go up at night, this is why a 24 hour Blood Pressure Monitors are given to see whether medications need to be adjusted. Doctors are usually concerned when blood pressure is not controlled at night and often increase medication to reduce this.

I will ask my doctor about a 24 blood pressure monitor. My medications have been adjusted so often. She's going to have to try a different one in addition to the diltiazem xc. The ramipril along with it was making my blood pressure too low. For a while it was fine but now it's back to causing problems.

In regard to your blood pressure meds if you have Primary Hyperparathyroidism some can make your symptoms worse. Dr. Norman has some info on this but if I recall correctly from all the medical stuff I have read you have to be careful if on a diruetic as they can cause dehydration. Dehyration causes your calcium to rise. Their are other BP meds also that reduce the urination excretion of calcium this can also cause your blood levels of calcium to increase and become symptomatic.

I'm on ramipril and dilitazem. Neither one is a diuretic but I will check out the info on parathyroid.com Thanks parachild!
