Hyperparathyroidism Support Group
Hyperparathyroidism is overactivity of the parathyroid glands resulting in excess production of parathyroid hormone (PTH). Increased PTH consequently leads to increased serum calcium (hypercalcemia) due to 1) increased bone resorption, allowing flow of calcium from bone to blood, 2) reduces renal clearance of calcium, and 3) increases intestinal calcium absorption.
I've had more than one doctor tell me there's not much chance of addiction if the pain is there.
I get the kind with ibuprofen in it because it helps along with the hydrocodone for the pain. You may be different but tylenol is like a placebo to me.
There's also new meds that people with fibromyalgia take that scare the pants off me (and put me on the floor) but you might be able to take them ok. Also, Cymbalta is supposed to be good for pain even though it's an antidepressant.
Some tri-cyclic antidepressants are given for pain, also. (also make you fat, lol!)
I'm sorry that you are in pain 24 hours a day! Hugs! I didn't mind the lol at all. :)
They may also run a test called ESR, in addition to calcium, PTH and phosphate.
If you go to the Doctor instead get your blood work done at an outpatient lab in the hospital as the results are often faster and would be in your patient hospital file in needed later.
I'm 8mths post surgery and my bone pain has always been my worst symptom, it is still increasing even after surgery (they are doing further investigations). Anyway the only thing I have found to work is Zomorph, which is slow release morphine I have 2 every morning and 2 everynight, occaisionally I need to take 3 for my worst days. I also take 600mg of Ibuprofen 3 times a day, which means I have to take Omaprezole to protect my stomache lining but hey it's a small price to pay for effective pain relief. I finally feel pretty much in control of my pain after 4 long years! Good luck, it's a miserable disease, I get sick and tired of feeling sorry for myself!! Take care x
Yes it is a miserable disease! I'm glad I don't have kidney stones and hope I don't have them again! The thirst gets to me too. I'm constantly thinking about wanting to drink something. Many days I drink more than I eat.
Just so you are aware Omeprazole is a proton pump inhibitor and reduces the intestinal absorption of calcium. Prior to my child's parathyroid surgery was advised to go off of Omeprazole for this reason.
Your pain medication requires that you take Omeprazole so you are in a opposing situation.
Calcium requires an acidic environment to be absorbed, especially calcium carbonate.
However, Calcium Citrate does not it can be absorbed in an alkaline environment which is what the Omepraole will create by reducing stomach acid.
Down the road if you no longer require Omeprazole, you may try to dose down as sudden stopping the medication can cause an acid rebound effect where your stomach produces too much calcium because you ended too abruptly.
Have Doctors done an ESR blood test and do yoiu have a bone density scan scheduled to maybe assess what is going on?
Should have read.... your body produces too much acid (not calcium )
oops sorry for the mistake
Parachild, do you know if we can take a little MOM or not? I think the magnesium in it is the kind that's not very absorbable.
