Hyperparathyroidism is overactivity of the parathyroid glands resulting in excess production of parathyroid hormone (PTH). Increased PTH consequently leads to increased serum calcium (hypercalcemia) due to 1) increased bone resorption, allowing flow of calcium from bone to blood, 2) reduces renal clearance of calcium, and 3) increases intestinal calcium absorption.
What age where you when you were first diagnosed? I'm curious because after my surgeries I was told that I was much younger than most who require surgery. I was 27 when I was diagnosed. My pth was 153 and my calcium was 10.7. I developed osteoporosis which presently is osteopenia. I had a 9mm kidney stone obstructing my left ureter which required surgery and stones on the right that were treated with surgery and lithotripsy. Looking at my old medical reports it was stated that all four glands were enlarged. (hyperplasia)
My calcium has been high normal and my pth is elevated right now. I'm not sure of the numbers since they measure them differently in Canada. I sometimes wonder why they didn't remove 3 and 1/2 glands and implant the remaining somewhere else during the second surgery. I know they said my numbers came down but still. I was in the hospital for a few days after my second surgery because it took a while to get my electrolytes balances. My potassium was too low so I had an iv drip.

I was diagnosed 5 weeks ago today and I am 19 years old (yes a youngin, I know!) My pth was 101 and my calcium was 12.3 (teens usually have a very high calcium). My bones are already week and I have a variety of symptoms that differ from adults I know that for sure. My symptoms seem to have flipped the past month and I am not sure if it was because of the surgery pre treatment of raising my vitamin D (I was at 24 while diagnosed). I had wicked bad anxiety, sleep problems, bone pain, no energy, no motivation (I am a college student and it got so bad I like gave up and somehow passed with flying colors), Brain fog, confusion (I still have it but not as bad!), and many more. Now I am able to function a little bit better but I cannot trust my memory at all!

Wow, I never knew that teens had a very high calcium with hyperparathyroidism. I have bone pain, osteopenia, headaches, constant fatigue, sleep problems, sometimes lack of concentration, low appetite, constipation, dizziness sometimes, muscle cramps. Those are the symptoms I can remember. I've been taking vitamin D too. I'm not sure if that's a good thing or not. I had my other surgeries in the US and my endocrinologist there prescribed vitamin D. I've been back in Canada for the past 5 years. My family doctor prescribed my vitamin D this time. Are you having your surgery today Tyler?

I'm 31, but have not received a diagnoses of Hyperparathyroidism. My labs are suggestive of such, but the Endocrinologist is on the fence right now. However, my aunt was 48 when she was diagnosed and had surgery.

I was diagnosed by my nephrologist Dr. At age 70. My pth has stayed high, and CA is high normal. I am 71.5 now and don't like the symptoms! But I am worried whether the surgery will help. I have lots of descendants and I want to live a very long time!

My pth has also been high and my calcium in the high normal range. I'm having symptoms but all my doctor sees is the high normal calcium so she won't refer me back to my endocrinologist. I hadn't seen my endocrinologist for over a year because my labs had been completely normal, normal pth and normal calcium. I used to have labs every six months but now it's every three months. How often do you have labs done ck?

I have a new lab next week for the endo. Dr. And an appt with her. I was checking online on my ckd connection and decided to see my nephrologist dr again before setting up a surgery date for the parathroids.Apparently I could have a mbd-ckd (mineral-bonedisease)problem. Because hyperparathyroid is just a part of mbd-ckd. So I am hoping he can help it make sense. My concern now is Confusion. My mind is really having problems. It's a bad symptom. Thanks for listening.
