Primary hyperhidrosis is the condition characterized by abnormally increased perspiration, in excess of that required for regulation of body temperature. Some patients afflicted with the condition experience a distinct reduction in the quality of life. Sufferers feel at a loss of control because perspiration takes place independent of temperature and emotional state.
Hi, my name is Jack and I've suffered with Hyperhidrosis since puberty. I've lost count of the amount of visits to the doctor to try everything from magnesium based antiperspirants to different pills to changing diet and finally ETS. Non of this has helped. Before ETS I had sweating on my hands, face and underarm. After the operation it seemed a success but within a few days I noticed a lot on compensatory sweating everywhere and I mean everywhere, even my shins where sweating. 6 months after my face and hands were at what I'd say 'normal' levels of sweating but underarm is worse than ever. I now also have server sweating on my chest, back, groin, legs, arms, you name it.
Around 2 years ago (around 2 years after ETS) I went back to my doctor to try yet another pill that wasn't available in the UK for HH treatment (only America) but once again persuaded the doctor to prescribe it to me. Nope, that didn't work but in the meeting with the doctor he said that losing weight might help. At that time I was 21 stone (294lb) so decided to try and lose some weight, why not, I'd tried everything else! So today I'm sitting here weighing in at 15 stone (210lb) with massive sweat patches under my arms wondering which jumper I should wear to work and how bad the chafing will be when I get home. Summer hasn't even hit yet but when it does I won't even be able to sit in a park with my friends because I'd either be looking stupid wearing a jumper or sitting there in a soaking wet tshirt with people commenting and giving me funny looks.
The reason I'm finally telling the world about this is that there is one thing that works and I've no idea why. Around 80% of the time after around 5 or 6 pints of beer/cider I'll stop sweating. Completely. It doesn't work all the time but when it does it's like a miracle cure. Does anyone have any idea why this is? If it's some kind of ingredient in alcohol that stops sweating then I'd really like to know what it is but I've done hours and hours of research and no one in the HH community has ever mentioned alcohol stopping sweating or not that I've seen anyway. Does this happen to anyone else? Should there be a study started about it? It's all well and good that alcohol stops my sweating but I can't walk around drunk all the time. Most girls that I've dated a few times think that I'm an alcoholic but have no idea about my sweating, I'm not sure which is worse?! haha
Anyway, I'd like to know your thoughts on this please and also if anyone has had MiraDry as I think this will be my next shot at reducing my sweating but is only for underarm.

I understand how frustrating it can be to deal with excessive sweating on a daily basis. I do commend you for your persistence and will to find a solution. In answer to your question, I have never used MiraDry but I do use Certain Dri clinical strength deodorant. It really had made a difference when it comes to my armpit sweat. I apply it at night and I notice way less sweat when I wake up in the morning and just through out my day in general. Its worth a try. Why not give it a shot? My ex used to drink ...quite a bit. But I never noticed a difference in his sweating in relationship to it.
As far as alcohol is concerned, I also have found benefits in the sense of hyperhidrosis. I'm not sure what the logic is, except perhaps it reduces anxiety, self-consciousness etc which results in us sweating less?
I agree with the other poster though, it's not a long-term solution, and so I drink much less now than I did eight or nine years ago. I've realised that the side-effects seem here to stay, so just try to live as healthily as possible, e.g. exercising, and good nutrition.
