In the last four years I have had two shunts fail and as a result brain damage was done. Has anyone else had this problem? Day to day activities are difficult for me and my family and friends can't understand why I can't do the things I use to do before this happened. I was diagnosed with hydrocephalus four years ago so all of this is new to me still. I have read several blogs/topics of people having a shunt for years and had no problems and I had one for less than two years and it fails and puts me in a coma-like state and I suffered brain damage then two years after that shunt is revised it fails again and more damage is done. another revision and now I am counting down until it fails again. I think I am a strong person but it is so hard not to worry. Thanks for letting me vent and any input would be much appreciated :)
Yes shunts can last for years, and yes shunts can cause many problems and be a pain in the neck. I have had a shunt since I was 7 weeks old, and I have a love/hate relationship with it. I love it that it lets me live and function normally, but I hate it that I need it and that surgery is involved with there are problems. I have had five shunt related surgeries within the past four years. On the other hand, before then I went 21 years with no surgery at all. So YES shunts can last for decades with no issues.
I know I did not give you any definite answers, but you are not the only one out there. I know exactly how you feel.
