You have to research surgery but consider the quality of the life you are able to lead. Shunt surgery for me was put off for a long time becasue it was thought the symptoms were an after affect of the trauma of previous surgery.
Balance problems, dizziness and head pain are my usual symptoms.

My NS DX'ed me with "arrested hydrocephalus" Prior to having the Sinus CT scan which led me down the road to finding out about enlarged ventricles, aqueductal stenosis, and my eventual diagnosis, I was not aware of any symptoms. Things that could have been symptoms, I'd experienced my whole life (ie, astigmatism, getting up to wee once nightly, etc). No headaches, gait issues, dementia, etc. After my DX, I've had tension headaches and have felt funny/disoriented at times, but those go away with anti-anxiety medication, so I'm guessing that they are not hydro related.

My NS recommended monitoring me, and ETV for surgical, but he did not think surgery was necessary. I would focus on quality of life issues.

I don't think there is a typical set of issues we all deal with.

Surgery may or may not change your symptoms. For adults some damage is irreversible. My shunt has only stopped me having fits, nothing else improved afaik.

omg! finally i found someone with my same symptoms.i also have involuntary movements in my arms but specially in my legs, dizziness and balance issues.
my neurologist was surprised that i didn't have any vomiting or shuffling gait.
and your neurosurgeon its right, i wouldn't recommend surgery either, first try to stabilize your risk factors. I had an ETV (endoscopic third ventriculostomy) on nov. 09', today i had my MRI. let's see how it goes. :) kisses

i had this same surgery and allready my headacs are gone so i can only hope that things keep going better. i found out that i hat hydrocephalus on my 22b day i can only hope it gets better

Surgery has not been an option for me yet. I am just winging it everyday. I only had headaches, nausia which was at first diagnosed as migraines linked to monthly hormonal changes. People only started to notice something was wrong when I could no longer bend forward to pick something up. It felt like my head was going to come off at the base of my skull. Shortly after the pins and needles started in my face. The CT scan showed that my brain was pushing agains my skull with no room to spare. Luckily I responded well to meds and are still using it since 2008. The only thing is that it is slowly showing more symptoms like bumping into things, forgetting simple things like words, running to the loo all the time, slurry speach some times, and the balance issues are getting worse. We were at a work Farewell and I had a drink in my hand when the balance issue popped up and the looks I got was not very friendly. Everyone thought I was drunk, but luckily for me my husband was there and we know the truth and that is all that matters to us. I will have to schedule an appointment with the doc soon. I'm not a Neurologist - just a hydro survivor - but it sounds to me like what you might have is Normal Pressure Hydrocephalus or NPH. You might mention it to the doctor and see if he/she feels that is what is wrong.
