Mine we on my right side for until I was 10 1/2 and due to an infection they were moved to the left side. But, I know the feeling, it does bother me sometimes. At one point I went for a battery of tests like you did and it eventually said to be acid reflux, so I've changed my diet a bit. Then again this was 6 years ago and I notice if I eat to much and my stomach gets full, it'll bother me a bit. Sometimes these things just happen and we need to live with them.

My Husband has the same kind of pain only it's on his Left side but that is also on the left side of his brain. He's gone through all the test you can image and they found nothing. He was told it was something he's got to live with. So it's part of having u're shunt.. It's nothing to worry about just have it checked if it makes you feel better but my husband has lived with his since he was 11 days old, and he's 47 now

yup. i have 2 VP shunts and have major stomach issues. i have to take a really strong prescription laxative every day just to make sure i don't get constipated.

yep i have had that pain since the shunt was put in and as shunts drain every day you have the pain i have had every test to try and find out what is causing the pain one doctor told me the bowel doesn't like free fluid some feel it some don't but one day my shunt drained 6 times in a row and the pain was so bad i thought i was going to pass out and the blood tests 2 days later showed my blood sugar levels sky high and they were fine 3 weeks before now they say i am diabetic and they think the shunt is close to the pancreas and the pain is it in spasm every time my shunt drains. its no good moving the shunt as my body needs it more and besides the damage is done so you have my sympathies i know what you are going through.

no pain is not normal... i dont really experience pain very much at all... deff not in my abdomin...

well for full disclosure i do have abdomin pain but thats from pelvic floor dysfunction which is being treated... it has nothing to do with the shunt though.

I also experience abdomin pain occasionally. Sometimes it gets really bad. I think it's just something that comes along with hydro.

i get kinda like a cramp in my right side from time to time..thats all

I am so glad to hear that I am not nuts, my heart goes out to everyone with vp shunts because it does hurt I am just afraid that it will block my colon I have a very bad problem with constipation. I know this doesn't help the pain but I will be honest with you I thank god for what ever amount of success I get with the abdominal tubing anything is better than the infection I got 2 days after my first shunt was placed I almost died. I just wanted to thank everyone for replying to my post! You guys rock! It's a bit of a relief to know that I'm not the only one that has issues with abdominal pain.

For what it is worth I had abdominal pains with my first shunt when the catheter rested on my left side. That shunt got infected so they removed everything. When the next one was put in it went in to the right side and I dont have any pain. I have no idea how much it moves around in there but it is definately less painful where it is now.

I had a VP shunt put in last April. I'm new to this group but am thankful to have found it!! I had been diagnosed in my twenties with fibromyalgia, which they now say was a misdiagnosis. I have had stomach pain ever since the operations. My pain is not always on my left or right, but sometimes just feels like my whole stomach hurts. I have had all kinds of test runs and they haven't found anything. I try to stay regular, because it does seem like it is worse if I am not. I have started exercising, eating lighter and staying away from pop as it seems to make it worse. The doctors won't say this is because of the shunt. Some days are better than others. It helps to know I'm not alone. I haven't given up. I keep looking for more information and asking more questions.

Thank you for asking that question. My Great Grandson D.J. is 2mo. old, born with Extreme Hydrocephalus and often I believe his stomach is causing him pain, and often he becomes constipated. We have discoverd that fruit juice helps that a lot. I can only imagine that placing the tubeing in the abdoman would cause some kind of discomfort for the body is saying...that doesn't belong here....right? Unfortunately it is a necessity. I will be paying more attention to our Little D.J. and his tummy dicomforts due to your post! Thank you, we have NO experience with Hydrocephalus and often feel quite inadiquite when striving to comfort and care for this Darlin baby. Yea I have experienced that too, especially around where the Scar tissue is and such, sometimes it hurts to breathe.

You should also have your doctors look at your scars, more importantly, the scar tissue. It may be building up and causing you pain. or the placement of the catheter is poking or rubbing an organ. u can solve the catheter problem with a general surgeon going in with a scope and placing it in a different area. it may take a few tries but the tube will eventually find its home.
