Want to homeschool my 14 yr old.

Hello. I'm wanting to homeschool my 14 yr. old who is still in public school but not sure where to start. I guess I can go to the library. I can't afford to buy books or chrome books. They use chrome books in her school. Does anyone know of good websites? I enrolled her in Discovery K 12 a couple yrs ago but she ended up wanting to stay in public school. Guess I can try that again. How do I pull her out of school? I mean I know I have to get a hold of them but not sure what goes on after that. I homeschooled her when she was in the first grade but had to put her in PS because of my work schedule. I work part time now 32-34 hrs a week so I will have more time to teach her. Any ideas or advice is very welcomed!! Thank you. :)

The fist thing to do is to find out the legal requirements to homeschool in your state. Here are a couple of links that may help: https://www.hslda.org/laws/, http://www.responsiblehomeschooling.org/policy-issues/current-policy/, http://projects.propublica.org/graphics/homeschool , You also may wish to check out the website for your state's 'Department of Education' to see if they have any information on homeschooling in your area.

Once you know what's required there are some resources available to help. Most things are not free, but a few are and a few others are low cost. http://www.freehomeschooling101.net has many suggestions.

Hi, lost_soul. I'll echo the previous poster's recommendation to find out the requirements for your own state and locality. Also, what are your child's goals for homeschooling and education more broadly? Most of the 14-year-olds in my community have their own learning goals and are able to achieve them without really relying on parents for instruction. Some families do best with a structured curriculum or prefer to adhere to the public school curriculum closely, but a great many do nothing of the kind, so it's very much up to you. Have you heard of de-schooling (taking time, usually one month for every year of conventional schooling, to release yourself and your kid from the mindset that the way schools instruct, schedule, memorize, test is the only way)? How about unschooling (trusting that you can't stop people from learning, and that freedom to follow interests will naturally lead kids to all necessary learning)? A lot of people integrate elements of unschooling into their repertoires without being fully unschoolers, but learning about the idea helps people give themselves permission to forge their own paths. Some of the different ways that people homeschool are outlined in a decent new documentary, Class Dismissed. maybe worth watching that with your child to see what you both think and what kind of journey you are both comfortable taking.
