This fall will be her 1st year in public school

For the last 3 years, we've homeschooled our daughter and she's starting public school this fall for the first time. We got her tested for ADHD last fall and are trying to get her on the right dose of medication. I'm concerned she's not going to like public school because she is used to the way she's been home schooled. I really want her to like it and do good like I know she can, but I'm thinking its going to go down hill within like the first week she's enrolled. Has anyone had experiences or concerns that might help me feel better about this? I'd appreciate any and all feedback or suggestions too. Thanks.

After homeschooling for a few years, I put my son back in public school last September. At the time I was thinking "I give it a week". Then a week passed and I thought, "I give it three weeks". Now because of my son's special needs I actually started him out part time and increased his schedule gradually, so at one point I thought, " I give it a week at full-time" :). We're most of the way through the year, it's going ok, what the school is willing to do is less academically challenging than what I was doing at home, but they are able to allow him more space and he gets to be around other kids. It's not perfect, there would be advantages to taking him back out, but I think for now it's what works for us. The one thing I did was talk to him about it up front so he understood what was going on and why. Also, we talk about his day often and I make sure to follow up with the teacher on any concerns I have.

Does your daughter have a friend who goes to her same public school? Is there some way to get her involved in extracurricular activities before she goes back so she can meet some other kids that go there if she doesn't know any already?
Did you go to public school and can tell her how the schedule and the classroom rules may be different?

There's no way to really know ahead of time how it will go, but I think you can make it work if you give her information upfront about what it's like and stay available and interested to help if she needs it.
