Highly Sensitive People HSP Community Group
The highly sensitive person (or HSP) is someone who cares deeply about everything ... feels emotions with great intensity ... is highly conscientious ... has a rich and complex inner life ... is very intuitive ... is often creative in a variety of ways... is easily overwhelmed and/or overstimulated. A HSP needs lots of quiet time, space, and freedom. If this sounds...
I've noticed that a lot of people are quick to dismiss other people's struggles because they haven't experienced them or can't understand them.
It's very invalidating.
Just recently, someone told me I didn't know what it was to struggle and I had it easy.
Granted, I have not been through what she had been through but that doesn't make my struggles any less real.
How do you respond to someone like that? This person knows very little of what I suffer and would not be able to commiserate with some things. I just didn't say anything. I vowed to myself never to share my struggles or feelings with this person. She has already showed me she won't understand.
There are some issues that most people will easily commiserate with and validate; these are the big things like rape or abuse. Even though they cannot fully know what the victim suffered, it can not be easily dismissed.
Then there are other struggles, the ones that aren't so obvious. They eat away at a person's soul and what makes it worse, is that others are so quick to dismiss them, downplay them, or see the individual as overreacting, and it leaves sufferer feeling not only the pain of their situation, but they are left feeling alone and isolated in their struggles.
I'm sorry you went through this.
Anyway, that's why we don't have a lot of friends but only very good friends....
