High cholesterol is the presence of high levels of cholesterol in the blood. It is not a disease but a metabolic derangement that can be secondary to many diseases and can contribute to many forms of disease, most notably cardiovascular disease. I remember the 70's well. This is when the cholesterol theory was propelled into popularity.
I must admit the theory sounded good and I accepted it myself. Eating saturated fat increases cholesterol levels, thereby causing arteries to clog up like pouring grease down the kitchen sink.
Eating bacon and eggs was out because back then, we believed eating cholesterol from eggs clogged arteries and caused heart attacks.
Clearly there was public acceptance of the theory. In fact, the public embraced the cholesterol theory to the extent everyone forgot it was just a theory.
Ironically it had never been proven. Even today with our advanced imaging technology, no one has proven eating steak and eggs clogs arteries.
So what would have happened had the public not embraced the theory? What if the public brushed it off and said "Sounds like poppycock to me"?
Had the public NOT accepted the theory, do you think Pfizer would have spent mega bucks developing Lipitor?
As it turned out, Lipitor became the worlds hottest selling drug, meeting the demand to lower cholesterol. But what if nobody wanted to lower their cholesterol and lipitor was a sales flop. Do you think other drug companies would have spent billions developing copy cat statins?
This is just my opinion and nothing more, but I think statins were created to meet public demand to lower cholesterol.
Due to Lipitor's incredible success, I think other drug companies wanted a piece of the pie, so they developed their own versions.
But was this good for the public?

Hormones are made from Cholesterol. Look closely at the word again. CholeSTEROL. STEROL to STEROID. Hence steroid hormones.
The body uses a multi step process to turn cholesterol into steroid hormones.
Regardless of what you believe religiously, creation or otherwise, do you think mankind was intended to "Manage his cholesterol" as part of life?
Its a powerful question someone else once brought up. And its a very good question that made me think.
