They are an excellent way to calculate the RISK / REWARD equation. This will help you, the consumer, make an informed decision.
NNT stands for NUMBER NEEDED TO TREAT. It addresses the question, "how many people have to take this drug for one person to benefit?"
The fewer people that are required to take the drug in order for one person to benefit, the better. So just like a game of golf, the lower the NNT the better.
The higher the NNT the worse. This means lots of people have to take he drug for one person to benefit.
In the case of antibiotics, almost everyone with an infection who take the drug will benefit, giving the drug a low NNT score. Thats good.
But what about Statins? How do they score on the NNT? Lets take a hard look. Lets see how Lipitor scores, and which group benefited in the clinical trials, and which group didn't benefit.
