From my experience, you're better off with a larger dose of ACE or ARB than of diuretic or calcium channel blocker. (ACE inhibitors and especially ARBs are relatively side effect free). Adding just a small dose of thiazide or CCB to the other drug can make all the difference in your numbers, and complies with the AB/CD protocol (see http://www.medscape.com/viewarticle/473543_8)
Also (and this should probably be several years down the line if you struggle getting control with multiple drugs) -- don't overlook the fact that your hypertension may be caused by something else. Unlikely -- but not impossible, as I found out.
