I was just wondering if we can get away with using ambulatory devices such as canes for our condition. I use a ride system called Para transit services and they will not allow my assistant to come with me unless I use ambulatory devices. If there is anyone out there that their doctor has prescribed them a cane for HS please, I encourage you to comment.

If a cane would help you, you should get one. My son was offered a wheeled walker, but declined at the time. A year later he needed a wheelchair due to intense pain with trying to walk.

unfortunately my doctor is on maternity leave for 4 months and the reception wouldn't even refer me to another doctor because they claim everything is all booked up

I am sorry, but you have the RIGHT to see a doctor, and can sue if they refuse to refer you! They are SOOO lucky that I am NOT their patient! You need to call and either demand a referral to another doctor (this IS affecting your EVERYDAY living!)or ask to speak with a nurse and see if he/she can get a doctor on staff to prescribe you a cane for ambulation. My doctor has already told me I can get ANYTHING from him that will Improve the quality of my life. I don't know what type of insurance you have.. I am assuming (ugh! lol) that you have medicare and medicaid if you are on disability like myself, so actually GETTING the cane wont be a problem. Try phoning the hospital and talk to a physical therapist, maybe they can help you find a suitable doctor to prescribe you a cane since you obviously need one for comfort of life. Not being able to go to the store (or wherever the transport takes you) is NOT conducive to YOUR well being, it is a travesty! Whatever you do, DON'T take NO for an answer, both the hell out of that doctors office until you get the desired results, believe me they will get you in if you call them and drive them nuts (I have had to do it before and know this works! LOL)Please don't let them bully you! YOU PAY THEM, they work for YOU!! I am sure you wouldn't let any other employee tell you no when you made a request to them, that Doctor should not be an exception! Good luck, and keep us posted on the outcome please!

I have used crutches and a cane before. I didnt waste money going to the doctor. I figured that they would just argue with me about it. I went to a few thrift stores and bought mine there. I didnt need to use them permanently, only when I had awful flare ups. I used the crutches when they cut open my back. I then had to switch over to the cane when I started getting flare ups under my arms. I know you can buy a cane at the drug store without a prescription. But if you can get your doctor to write you a prescription for a can then most insurance companies with cover most of the cost. I found it cheaper just to get them from a thrift store.
