I don't know if this is true or not but I always felt like things were worse if I didn't shower right after exercising. This could have totally been in my head though from all the years of doctors telling me it was hygiene.
One thing that helped me immensely was the sunlight. I have a theory that HS only infects areas that are void of direct sunlight. When I would expose a lesion to sunlight for multiple days it would improve and start to heal more quickly. Tanning also helped but obviously is bad for your skin so I tried to keep that to a minimum.
