Hidradenitis Suppurativa Support Group
Hidradenitis suppurativa (hi-drad-uh-NIE-tis sup-yoo-ruh-TIE-vuh) is rare, long-term skin condition that features small, painful lumps under the skin. The disease manifests as clusters of chronic abscesses or boils, sometimes as large as baseballs, that are extremely painful to the touch and may persist for years with occasional to frequent periods of inflammation,...
I had acne through my teenage years and still suffer from acne breakouts in my adult years. I have literally tried everything from topicals to accutane. The accutane worked for 1.5 years and then the acne came right back, but worse than ever. My breakouts started to clear up more after changing my diet (no sugar, dairy or gluten), and began stressing less. I also have a pretty militant skincare routine that has really cleared up my skin. I use a cream cleanser such as Cetaphil or Glossier. I use Thayer's alcohol free toner, which brings back moisture to my skin and top off with the product that is responsible for clearing me out. It is a face oil that I buy at Sephora called Sunday Riley U.F.O. It is pricey, but totally worth it because it has a great balance of acne fighting ingredients such as salicylic acid and healthy oils. I top off with the Sunday Riley Tidal Brightening Enzyme Water Cream. I know everyone's skin is different but these are lifestyle changes and products that have helped clear me out...you can give them a try and if they don't work try something else. Also, make sure your daughter uses sfae cosmetics on her face. So stear clear of parabens, mineral oils, sulfates. You can check ingredients on this website called cosdna. It tells you how safe cosmetic's ingredients are for sensitive and acne prone skin.
When it comes to cosmetics, I like using the following brands because they use natural ingredients and fruits. 100 percent pure and Juice Beauty are my favorite make up brands and don't break me out.
I know Its' a painful and frustrating process but please don't give up!
I made an account just to answer this question because I’ve been in your daughters place. I only have HS between my breasts. I’ve had large breasts since high school and with them came HS flare ups. I had painful/pretty bad acne in my teen years on my face and back, so dermatologists just thought it was acne there too. I was put on antibiotics, creams, and finally birth control for my acne. Birth control cleared it up, but not the HS. It took me going to a female doctor who cared about my pain and embarrassment to find out about HS. She has been very helpful but I still haven’t fully managed it. I’m now 22 without acne even after stopping birth control pills. I was terrified my HS would go out of control if I went off the pill, but so far not much of a difference. Unfortunately, diet and gut health seems to have a lot to do with it (dairy, junk food, alcohol, etc. definitely make it worse, probiotics and vegetables seem to make it better). I hope your daughter knows it DOES get better, she’s not alone, and that she’s lucky to have a mom who cares so much. :)
