Two days ago I went to the doctor for the first time since being back in San Diego (I'm here for the summer from LA). I thought I was going for just a normal check up but this young woman, maybe in her late twenties takes me back into a room and closes the door and begins asking me basic questions about my condition: how long, how painful, what meds etc.
Then pretty soon she starts getting pretty personal: how does this make you feel? are you dependent on drugs to get through your day? do you feel hopeless sometimes? etc etc. Before I know it i'm one big ball of tears as I tell her about my condition and how depressed I've been for the past few years. Man, she was so sweet. I've never had someone take the time to REALLY listen to the way this condition affects me so by the end of it all I had to tell her how much I appreciated her. Side note, I've cried to just about every doctor i've ever had, and thats a lot. But nobody has tried to help like this woman has. She highly recommended for me to go to therapy. She said often with conditions that are hard to treat and hard to talk about therapy might be a good option. She gave me a long list of therapists in the san diego area that accept my insurance and told me to give it a try. I've never thought about trying a therapist before, but maybe it would be good for this depression and anxiety that this condition brings. Has anyone else thought about getting a therapist or currently has one and can tell me about their experience? I'd love to hear about it. My first appointment is on tuesday!
