Treatment for hernias can be no treatment, to medicines to surgery. Modern surgical methods to treat hernias are much improved over older techniques and recovery times are much shorter.

Life with a hiatus hernia

I was diagnosed with a hiatus hernia and gastritis. I am ok one day then the next it just flares up with really bad pain. A doctor said that a hiatus hernia doesn,t hurt and that the pain will be from the gastritis. It will just come on like a bloating then really bad pain that just lasts for hours. Its in the top of my stomach. I went for a pizza last weekend and was fine but later got some reflux. The next day was really bad pain. Then it settled but Ive got it back again. I take 3 PPIs a day now on doctors advice and they do not help. I don,t know how much more I can take of my stomach being like this. Im suposed to go back to see the gastro but I don,t know when. It really ruins your life with the pain. I will proberly get another endoscopy. I see in some posts that people are getting bad pain with the hiatus hernia. Does it heal? Im wondering if this will ever get better. I really wish it would. Im wondering what the gastro will do. Any comments would be appreciated. I just will have to see I know whether its the gastritis or both and what he will do. Also what PPI are you on? Does it work? Im on Pantop0razole.

I am new to this website. I have a h. hernia and acid reflux disease.
I am taking nexium 40 mg daily. This past week I have had terrible
upper stomach pain. I live on creamed potatoes, ice cream, and other very soft food. I am so tired of this all-time pain. Don't know what to do next. Any help would be appreciated.

I'm new to this group but I can tell you it does heal. Think of your hernia as an open fire door that allows stomach acid to burn your esophagus. Every time you eat acidic food, like the sause on your pizza, you are re-burning sensitive skin that is trying to heal. When I burn my hand on the stove it hurt whenever I put it in the lukewarm water from the shower. Of course my hand doesn't burn in the shower once my hand has healed. Same idea. Pizza today is horrible pain and pressure tomorrow. If you stop eating acidic foods all together and take antacids like Mallox, you can heal your esophagus. I can have a 6 oz cup of milky coffee a few times a month. I love coffee. I even had a few pieces of pizza with red sause last month with no side effects. Giving up the food I love is hard but nothing is worse than the mock heat palpitations and pressure on my chest that makes me feel like I'm having a heart attack. I can't take any acid prohibitors because of side effects so I control my symptoms with diet and daily pro-biotic yogurt. I am symptom free unless I eat "bad" foods two days in a row. It does take awhile to heal your esophagus and throat but you can do it. My doctor said some people stop having symptoms after awhile and others always have them. He doesn't know why this is. Try flatbread instead of pizza. Or try thin crust, no fatty meat, white sause or olive oil and a european portion of cheese as great alternatives. Yum Tum!

I have a hiatal hernia and IBS...so I have to try and watch 2 different diets at it caused me a lot of stress when I was younger..but for me eating healthy is all I need to do..I can splurge here and there but i try watch it so I don't get sick and I take a pill everyday. When I first got mine I had to watch everything..give it a break and do as best as U can a few weeks and it will get better and better I think.
