There are several kinds of hernias, but the all happen when pressure pushes an organ (often the intestine) through a weak spot in a muscle face or wall. Treatment for hernias can be no treatment, to medicines to surgery. Modern surgical methods to treat hernias are much improved over older techniques and recovery times are much shorter.
has anyone had surgery to remove hiatus hernia?? and is it preferable to taking meds everyday?

my doctor said i could live with mine. i take nexium.. sometimes it works and other times it doesnt

i had the surgery at the end of september. i had it done laproscopically and am glad i did it. i can lay on my stomach again, i can eat whatever i want, i can finally bend over and tie my shoes with out acid coming up. it does take a while to get back to normal eating, and there are somethings i won't eat yet. if you have any other questions, please let me know.

Do it, have the surgery. It changes your life. View my story. Both myself and my mother have had successful laproscopic corrective surgery for Hiatus Hernia and we have a changed life. You don't need to live with the torture.

I was told also that I could live with mine and that the surgery is not a total answer. I do take Zegerid and other antacids every day. I heard it is not a perfected procedure yet and there is a possibility for other troubles because of it. I don't really know what to believe yet though because I have not done a lot of research on it. The pain is not that unbearable for me yet but I am definitely interested in a surgery once it is proven to be beneficial with very little risk.

I am one week today post op hiatus hernia with esophagus wrap. I am still in horrible pain which has been narrowed down to possible trapped gas behind my liver. I had a 7 hour surgery with 6 lap holes. I have had surgeries for other things years ago but this by far has to be the worse. I am on a full liquid diet and will be until post op appt. July 20. Running out of ideals for things to eat.

@Abrainthing if u could go back would u still have the surgery??? im only 21 and play rugby and i don't want this to be the end of my career, but I've read most ppl are worse off after the surgery so im scared

Totally agree. The surgery can cause more problems and many regret having it as you can seein old posts here. If you have a small sliding hiatal hernia, it is easily managed with a careful diet but this is hard when you are only 21! It sucks! How did you get the HH? A lot of straining exercise can cause them. How big is yours?
