Hernia Support Group
There are several kinds of hernias, but the all happen when pressure pushes an organ (often the intestine) through a weak spot in a muscle face or wall. Treatment for hernias can be no treatment, to medicines to surgery. Modern surgical methods to treat hernias are much improved over older techniques and recovery times are much shorter.
I was skeptical when I went to one for my small HH. It took 2 months of bone crunching in the thorasic region and all of a sudden I noticed a difference in my heartburn. For sure!
Just give it a try but make sure you go to one that has helped other people with an HH. I keep going once a month but it definitely has changed and my diet was the same all through the treatments. So it wasnt diet related.
You need to do the diet part and the treatments. I tried an osteo path first but it wasnt as effective as the chiro was.
It could be coincidence but I dont think it was.
I am curious, though...with the ppi's and h2blockers...
how long is this treatment? My GI isn't very clear on this.
I realize that it's probably different for everyone...
but with my having inflammation of esophagitis and inflammation of gastritis PLUS a small hiatal hernia...
do you have any idea of how long I should be taking the ppi's?
I don't want to be on them forever...but I certainly don't want to risk cancer, either.
And with that said...how would a GI/Dr know if it's healed without doing another endoscopy?
I'm really trying to eat, but I am having such trouble. I have lost 41 lbs. in six weeks.
While I definitely need to lose the weight....this is certainly not healthy.
I still need to lose another 65 lbs to be at a good weight for my height.
I have read that obesity basically ruins the treatment of ppi's ....almost as if it's wasted. That is another thing that frightens me.
I really didn't want to get on an anti-anxiety pill, because I read they're also hard to get off of.
Any suggestions?
Ok this is what I know for certain. Anxiety makes this issue more difficult to heal. it is the biggest challenge for most people on the site. Many people take something for it. I have never had that issue but i know Xanax is addicting but i think there are others that are not so addicting. talk to your doctor about it. Anxiety is the number 1 cause of reflux and gastritis. It is a tough issue to deal with. It is so common on the GERD and gastritis site. You may need to take something.
You can get an HH from a lot of stress actually. Overweight people do tend to get them though. Too much strain in the area. A small one is no big deal though. So try not to stress over it. it does make you more prone to heartburn and reflux . Then you can get gastritis as you have, from chronic heartburn.
gastritis takes longer to heal for sure. That can take a lot longer. Once you stop having symptoms then you need to stay on the current PPI for another 3 weeks or so and then you gradually wean yourself off over a period of time. Once you stop having symptoms is the time you know you have healed a lot.
You wont have to be on them forever. Gastritis is the tricky part. The esophagus is way more forgiving. So try not to worry about getting cancer in there. it is rare. I know you had strictures. How long have you had reflux symptoms for? The longer you have had symptoms the longer it takes to heal. So if you have had chronic reflux for 3 months expect it to take 6 months. if you have had gastritis for 3 months it can take longer than 6 months. The stomach lining is not so forgiving.
I know a lot about these issues and have never read about the PPIs not working for overweight people? That doesnt make sense to me. it doesnt seem logical. So just take that thought out of your head for now. How long have you been on that higher dosage of Nexxium now and are you noticing any difference? it can take 2 months before you notice a decent amount of improvement. But Dexilant 60 is the best one I think to heal your esopahgus.
I dont like PPIs much either but i had to take Dex after i came back from california with a ton of heartburn and a bit of gastritis it works well and then I went off after 6 weeks and have never done that again. I know people who have had to stay on dexilant for a year because they had reflux for so long and it was never treated.
Just follow what SHIHONAGE suggests for the gastritis. The pepzin GI etc.. and to heal quicker I think a PPI is the best. I also like the Zantac idea but it may not work for you yet. You can get yourself down to that at some point. Be prepared for gastritis to take longer.
I know you are not eating much. It is too ealry for you to feel much better but put small amounts of something like oatmeal in your stomach or plain bread and or rice to start. gastritis actually gets worse when the stomach is empty. Small amounts of food every 3 hours or so. Oatmeal is good for reflux.
You need to prop yourself up at least 8 inches at night and the shorter wedges work better for reflux. bed bath and beyond has ones that work well when you are better. I used a 12 inch one when I was bad.. That is probably what you need. It makes a huge difference. It doesnt work well when you put it under your mattress. put it on top of the mattress. Doctors are not so good at this stuff unless they have had this issue. Raising the bed only works for mild cases. The angle has to be greater for it to work when you have an HH.
It will get better. be patient. Right now everything burns etc but it will change.
