Sterilize him and lock him in a basement. Take away all his human rights and call him a bad person. Oh and just shoot the girlfriend, she's not blood anyway, so she's not worth saving. That should do it.

Now, he's banging his head against the wall, realising what it means for a newborn to go through withdrawal, have Hep C because of the mother and living under extreme poverty, socially isolated, at the god forsaken place the mother dumped, leaving her abusive/alcholic parents to take care of her child while she goes on with her heroic life.

My question is quite simple: when my brother is all over the place accusing god, society, us, himself, of everything bad in his life, any inisghts about how we should behave? Confront or just let him get it out of his chest?

I would bring him to a detox and tell him the only help you can provide is a ride to detox or rehab. Everything else they have to do on their own. But I will say this if he is clean and working his program it is important that family be supportive I'm not saying leave your door unlocked or trust them not to go through your purse when you are in the bathroom, you will still need to keep a close eye that you don't become a victim. I lost one son and the other is still in re-hab when he gets out I want him to know he didn't burn this bridge my love for him will never end. As long as he is clean I will be there as a friend a shoulder and most of all his Mother. I would give everything material I have to have my oldest son back. I'll be damned if I will turn my back on one that is still breathing and trying to stay clean

As a family, we are by my brother's side, but we're not taking responsibility for his actions anymore, no safety nets, no trying to "convince" him. We've all taken a step back.

I miss him and I care for him A LOT, but I don't contact him anymore. I've told him that when he's ready to contact me and most of all to forgive himself, I'll be here, I'm not going anywhere..

You do not turn your back on him. You release him with love. If you are interested in helping him and yourself, make sure you google a local Naranon meeting and go weekly. It has helped me tremdously. Learning about the disease of addiction is important for your understanding. You don't allow his lifestyle into your home, give him cash, etc, but you do show love. If he is asking for help you can google a free rehab in your area. Most never ask for help so I think it's good he is. One big obstacle is insurance. The poor do not have access to the quality of help others are. Our Naranon meeting recently had a special night to watch a video on the neurology of addiction and it was very interesting. I think you can order it if your interested. I have a 20 year old son who blew me away with the news he was an addict. He asked for help and is working so hard...it's a horrible addiction. They did chose to take drugs..they did NOT decide to become addicts.
