I am going through the same with my older sister. It's so painful to watch. I don't know what to say or what to do because I've never been in her shoes. I want to understand but it's hard. She says she wants to get clean, she even sometimes will then goes right back to it. I wish I had the words to just make her stop. She says all the time she wants to, but she hasn't. I get angry at times at her but then I try and push those thoughts away because it doesn't help. I just get frustrated bit it's because I don't understand. So I'm interested also if anyone has had any family members, loved ones, friends, that have been through this similar situation. What can I do? What can I say? Hiw can I help?

You can't. Well I take that back. yes you can. Don't enable them. Don't give them money. Not even when they say it's for food. Because truth is, even if it is for food they still wouldn't buy food just buy the dope. Or they would even sell the food to get the money to pay for more drugs. An addict Will sell the shoes on they're feet if they could. And honestly, I'm not trying to sound like a Bitch but , you will never be able to understand what it is an addict thinks or feels or wants or let alone what they mean when they tell you "you'll never understand". Only an addict can understand another addict. Understand???
I'm sorry for that. Yea she will always want to better herself. Some people think if she wants it then she'll go find help. But others will not be so easy to look for help like that. And other addicts who will always want help too will need a helping hand. Someone to guide them into that right directions. Just like some people are followers and some are leaders. And some people need guidance and discipline and others will need tough love.
If you still are having trouble maybe try a Narc-anon meeting. It's like how NA (narcotics anonymous) is for the addict. But the narc-anon meetings are for the friends and family of the addict. To help them better understand our world and it gives the family and friends more helpful tips and tools to better help and be there for the addict.

I used to use opiates very very heavily. I had a $100 a day habit at one point! Honestly looking back I don't know how I supported it for so long before finally hitting rock bottom. Here is how I quit:
1) Doing as much research as possible on the subject and reading other people's experiences
2) Avoiding the people I used to associate with who were still in the drug circle
3) Replacement therapy!!! Every person who comes off opiates will need some sort of dopamine/endorphin releasing activity to feel "normal"... many drink or gamble, some turn to other drugs. Working out is a GREAT alternative even though it sounds cliche', it really works since endorphins are similar to morphine chemically to the brain.
4) This may have been one of the biggest things that helped me quit, but can also be dangerous if not used properly: Suboxone treatment (not through a doctor, but self-medicated). Suboxone, or Subs as many users call it, is a very potent prescription only drug that has two active chemicals in it- Naloxone and Buprenorphine. Naloxone blocks the opiate receptors making it MUCH harder to get high. This is what they give heroin addicts when they are OD'ing and it will instantly bring them back to life. The second chemical (Bupe) is a semi-synthetic opiate which is SUPER long lasting- up to 72 hrs in my experience.
Subs made me feel "normal" again and it made quitting SO much easier. I would use exactly 1mg a day sublingually (under the tongue) or intra-nasally. They make 8mg strips that I would cut into 8 small pieces roughly 1mm x 1mm and this would prevent me from wanting to get high for the entire day and even two or three days at times. I would highly recommend this treatment for serious addicts that cant seem to quit! It saved my life!!!
