for the most part, i am 100% opposite of my grungy heroin days and have been known to shower 5 times a day just to not be like that.
however, when i am stressed, overwhelmed, depressed - anytime anything is off-kilter emotionally, hygiene is the first thing to suffer.
i'll shower once a week (if i'm lucky), and go days without brushing my teeth.
i still look decent, but...eh...i feel gross.
i try so many things to combat this.
most successful has been buying really awesome bath products.
like stuff that smells amazing and feels great on your skin.
if i know i have some shiny, new, amazine-smelling soap or something waiting in the shower for me - i am more inclined to shower.
also, my bf is stellar at telling me, "dude, you stink. take a shower."
or "man...put on some deodorant."
it used to piss me off, now i realize he's doing me a huge favor.
Part of the problem is the depression I think- which I still suffer from daily. Another part is a-motivational syndrome mostly from smoking marijuana. I still don't have great eating habits and will often times eat only one meal a day.
My advice is to find something where you HAVE to shower every day, like a serving job, or working out at the gym, etc. I have to shower every single day in order to be presentable to my tables, otherwise my income will suffer.
