Hepatitis C Support Group
Hepatitis C is a blood-borne viral disease which can cause liver inflammation, fibrosis, cirrhosis and liver cancer. The hepatitis C virus (HCV) is spread by blood-to-blood contact with an infected person's blood. Many people with HCV infection have no symptoms and are unaware of the need to seek treatment. Hepatitis C infects an estimated 150-200 million people worldwide.
I do appreciate, though, your list and I may bring some of it up with my doc .
I am curious though, all those supplements and no milk thistle ?
that is another one I want to ask him about tomorrow. Also , Z, are you done with tx ?
I am having a rough day and just can't think straight.
wondering if you are post tx,
I have always kept a set of documents worked up on my computer in a folder "Health Docs" which include lists of Surgeries, Procedures, Current Medications/Supplements/Allergies (cuz I just got tired of filling out forms every time I had to go to a new doctor, so now, I just say "see list attached.") My GI doc went thru that List, and said there shouldn't be any problem (but again, I do NOT have Cirrhosis) and each patient's body is different, so my list is just a list provided as a guide (I never intended it to mean "You all should take all of these supplements"). My GI doc had no problem, as most are Amino Acids, Vitamins - he did not ask why Milk Thistle was not on the list, and he did not suggest I take it.
I found many suggestions relative to Supplements thru Lucinda Porter, R.N., via a Facebook HepC Group: http://hcvadvocate.org/library/herb_glossary.asp (some, I agreed with, others, I researched further, and disagree with, so there you go..)
I also made numerous calls to mysupportpath.com (Gilead) as well as the Specialty Pharmacist FedExing meds to me during the first couple of weeks on Treatment (Sovaldi 400mg1x/day w/Ribavirin 400mg in am, and 600mg in p.m. (but now reduced to 400mg Riba 2x/day due to weight loss & side effects, itching, skin rash, severe fatigue & messed with my PTSD responses).
I ruled out Milk Thistle because of Lucinda Porter's research, copied here for your convenience (but go to her website listed above - she's fairly well-renowned as an Advocate for HCV:
Milk Thistle (Silybum marianum): A great deal of research has been conducted using this herb for a variety of liver diseases, although research specifically targeting HCV is scant. Three ingredients in milk thistle are of scientific interest because of their potential therapeutic value and capacity to protect the liver. These ingredients are silibinin, silychristin, and silydianin, collectively known as silymarin. The evidence is promising regarding the use of milk thistle for upset stomach and diabetes. The evidence is inconclusive at this point regarding milk thistles potential to treat various liver diseases. Further hepatitis C studies are currently underway.
Attention for Liver Disease: The Hepatitis C Antiviral Long-Term Against Cirrhosis (HALT-C) study reported that silymarin was associated with reduced symptoms, but not reduced liver inflammation when used by HCV patients. May lower liver function tests. Because it appears to interact with cytochrome p-450 metabolized substances (see About Cytochrome P-450 below), do not take milk thistle during HCV treatment especially if taking Olysio (simeprevir) combination therapy.
not saying which source is better , esp. since I don't know. I have read Dr. Melissa Palmer's book about Hepatitis and Liver Disease, as it was mentioned to me in this forum a few years ago. I think some of what she says may contradict what you learned from Lucinda Porter's ; but not only do I not know for sure until I look it up again, like I said I have no idea who is correct as far as the Milk Thistle
but , truly I am grateful to you and open minded to learn.
when I have more time , I plan to read the links you shared. I am the complete opposite of organized. I envy that. :)
Vape it!
ErnieCoolCat - I agree. I can only do that in the evenings, as it increases my hunger way too much. I found that when I did it earlier in the day, I became very anxiety-ridden. Probably cuz when I smoke early in the day, I end up not being able to do anything else. I know, I know - depends on the "strain" - You know here in Oregon, it's legal recreationally now, but our Pain Mgmt Doctors will not prescribe any pain relievers if there's a positive pee-test for pot, due to it being like doubling up on CNS (Central Nervous System) Depressants. But once treatment for me ends on Aug 8th, I'll get to go back to tinctures, as they don't make me hungry (but I only like the Alcohol tinctures - can't stand the Olive Oil or the Glycerin-based ones at all)... Smoke 'em if ya got 'em - right? hahaha
.I have it on prescription as my doc recommended it while I was on chemo...it is great for pain and anxiety and as I have problems maintaining my weight it gives me some appetite
retired is a great job
lol
* when I try nicely to say to someone I can't talk now...or I can only talk briefly and they ignore that....I have to take that sign that they don't respect my time. (esp. if it keeps repeating)
I found some EmercencyC stuff to put in my water so I have been doing that each day , one bottle..and getting it real cold ; it does really help. one has the kind of stuff you mention, Zennah, and one is more Vit C and other vitamin based.
I am starting to believe you though, what a difference these things can make.
on the bummer side of things I cannot consume or smoke pot.....long hx of anxiety with it. plus I take too many other rx meds and some require urine tests for drugs. But still, I voted for it to be legal !
my left side started to hurt me immensely last night.....and my abdomen is back to really bloated. I ate maybe 10 tiny pretzels and some almonds and boom I was doubled over in pain. I know from my ct scan etc, I have pancreatitis but doc did not really talk about that. there is a problem with my abdominal veins and he only talked about that and the cirrhosis. going to call today and see if they got my BW results yet.
So, my point is, just cuz the food is in the "Foods to Avoid" category for whatever ailment, we each find thru the process of elimination of one food category at a time, which food is the source of discomfort.
I feel for ya, truly I do!
