I have had to put down four geriatric cats over the last few years and it upset me for a long time after after.it's very hard to know when is the best time to help a pet move on.
With my cat she was voiding all over my bedroom - couldn't use her box. I didn't want to think that I was having her put down because of the disaster she was making to my carpeting. Vet said: "Wait, you'll know." So i waited and waited. In hindsight, I am sorry I waited as long as i did.
It's always a tough decision...
Hope you find a suitable solution. Nothing worse than waking up and it is still feels like yesterday.
As a retired vet tech you have to look at the dogs' quality of life.
1) is she eating?
2) is she interacting with you
3) is she in pain constantly
4) is she soiling herself regularly.
If she fails on any two points you should consider. For me, if she is in constant pain regardless of the other points, I'm gonna consider.
Know this,, euthanasia is very peaceful and no suffering us involved. Don't ever keep a pet alive for selfish reasons. Suffering for your benefit is unfair to the animal.
Having taken part in many euthinasias, having seen my mother lie in bed as a vegetable, brain dead, it raises the question for legalizing human euthinasia, but that is for another discussion.
I think you will know when it is time. I did.
Will keep you in my prayers with this.

Tulsa - I agree with her suggestion - it was my 1st thought. Something to help your dog sleep will give you sleep - win-win
riba messes with your brain chemistry and causes insomnia for months after tx but ive had an interesting experience the last week or so . insomnia has always plagued me , even worse after sov / riba tx . for years ive used a homemade pillow that was essentially a normal feather pillow split lenghtways and resewn up . a chiropractor would call my need for such a spine straightening pillow a " military neck " . i found a couple of pillows at a thrift store last week that were also half pillows but extremely high quality and overstuffed in comparison to mine . i started using one of these pillows and havent taken an ambien in 6 nights nor have i woke back up midway thru the night . i close my eyes , fall asleap , and when my eyes open again its daylight . incredible , worth sharing ..
so that is adding to your problem.
I don't have a pet - Hubby and I made an agreement on this due to many reasons, but I think you should listen to what the Vet-Tech said,
again - don't have one to really know what it feels like.
I do understand you have tough decision here.
Stress makes us sicker.....
