I was never given that. I looked it up, and most links said sirolimus is most often given after kidney transplant. I would hope though, that a good kidney transplant specialist would know that if a patient also had Hep C, to not put them on sirolimus. There are several immunosuppressants they chose from. I am on Cyclosporin and will be for the rest of my life. There were a couple of others I was also taking for a while after my transplant, but are not on them any more. Most people who have had liver transplants are either on Cyclosporin (Neoral) or Prograff for the "duration", so I've been told.

I'm on Prograf (FK-506) for the duration... That immunosuppressant is a relatively new one... The Cyclosporin Marylyn takes is the first of the immunosuppressants used in organ transplants... She takes it because I believe (Correct me if I'm not correct Marylyn) she's allergic to the Prograf which is rare although there some that are. Hey! Whatever works is most important!

Prograf was developed @ the University of Pittsburgh back in the early eighties and was approved for medicare in 1995 I believe... I could be off a year or 2 bu, around that time...
It is the most widely used immunosuppressant drug used in organ transplants and is what i take for the rest of my life.

There have been some successful transplants whereby the patient is given a bone marrow transplant also from the donor and then transplanted with the organ into the recipient...
If successful, this eliminates the need for the patient to be on any immunosuppressant drugs for the rest of their lives!!!
I wish they were doing this back when I had my transplant but, I'm glad that it's available to patients who are eligible for it today!
